We are seeking a Research Scientist (Contract) to support and lead product development initiatives within a fast-paced R&D organization. This role focuses on innovation in the chocolate category and involves hands-on development, cross-functional collaboration, and technical problem-solving from concept through commercialization. The position offers a mix of independence and mentorship while contributing to impactful, business-critical projects.

This role reports to a Senior R&D Manager and is based at a technical center. Domestic travel of approximately 25 40% is required, with potential international travel.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support product development projects delivering innovative chocolate products, including formulation and ingredient development.
  • Execute prototyping and scale-up activities from bench top to pilot plant and full manufacturing scale.
  • Lead workstreams within larger initiatives and independently manage low-complexity projects.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering, Marketing, Quality, Regulatory, Supply Chain, and Project Management.
  • Apply scientific rigor and sound technical principles to development and commercialization activities.
  • Assess technical feasibility of new product concepts and provide data-driven recommendations.
  • Understand and consider business and financial impacts of development decisions.
  • Partner with Supply Chain to support quality improvements, value optimization, and ingredient shortage mitigation efforts.
  • Contribute to product and process improvement programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Food Process Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • 2 4 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience leading or contributing to innovation initiatives such as product development, process optimization, cost or quality improvement, or technology validation.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technical knowledge throughout development and commercialization.
  • Working knowledge across multiple technical disciplines (e.g., R&D, Sensory, Engineering, Packaging).
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Solid business acumen, decision-making skills, and understanding of financial impacts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, change-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chocolate product development or manufacturing.
  • Prior experience in a consumer packaged goods (Client) environment.
