SUMMARY
The Research Subject supports the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI) Aerospace Medical Research Division's Cabin Safety Team. The research subject will take part in a research study about the efficiency and safety of methods for evacuating a seated or wheelchair-bound disabled passenger from a simulated aircraft cabin to perform tasks as specified by research protocols. This evacuation study requires the participants to be representative of the flying public, who are reasonably healthy and able to perform work classified by the Bureau of Labor as being "Very Heavy Work", specific medical conditions relevant to the research protocol and be 18 - 60 years of age.

Be physically able to participate in a rapid simulated egress from an aircraft without endangering themselves or others.

THIS PARTICULAR RESEARCH SENARIO REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING:
Be representative of the flying public, that is someone who would be reasonably expected to utilize air travel and potentially benefit from this research.
Be literate in, and able to understand and follow directions presented in written and spoken English language.
Participate in mild warm-up exercises and stretching of hamstrings, lower back, shoulders, and quadriceps before and during participating in the session, at most, nine trials, and will be encouraged to stretch and stay limber throughout the session.
Be willing to allow the FAA access to any medical records generated during or after participation in the experiments.
No unnecessary personal belongings with them during the evacuation sessions.
Medical Qualifications
Individuals must not have medical conditions or physical limitations that would preclude them from participation in work classified as 'very heavy work' by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that is "occasionally requiring lifting or carrying weight of >100lbs. Disqualifying conditions include:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
No prior experience or training required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Qualified individuals for the evacuation research scenario must be:
Must be 18 - 60 years of age.
Be able to lift and pull >100lbs.
Be willing to provide accurate personal information, such as age, education level, previous flying experience, etc., to be used for research purposes.
Be willing to have anthropomorphic measurements recorded, such as height, weight, girth, and seated back-to-knee length, for research purposes.
Are required to wear comfortable, casual clothing with long sleeves and long pants, no low-cut, mid-drift or halter tops, or dangling jewelry.
Are required to wear flat, closed-in and low-heeled shoes, such as tennis shoes, that are firmly affixed to their feet and not likely to be lost during the experiments. Sandals, flip flops, crocs and high-heeled shoes are not acceptable.
Be physically able to participate in a rapid simulated egress from an aircraft without endangering themselves or others.
