Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Research Technician is to coordinate and support molecular studies of the gut microbiome in the Andermann Lab at UNC-CH. The Research Technician will be responsible for both clinical research and laboratory research duties. This is a microbiology-focused position, so strong skills in the microbiology lab (culturing) will be used.

The Research Technician will also perform laboratory tasks related to shotgun metagenomic sequencing (DNA extraction, library prep/PCR, and pooling of samples) and will also perform the duties of a study coordinator, including coordinating the Cancer Center Microbiome Biorepository and Database (reminding patients, updating the database, and collecting samples). The Research Technician will work under the close direction of the principal investigator, Dr. Tessa Andermann, in collaboration with other labs and PIs as part of the Cancer Center and the Division of Infectious Diseases.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Management Preferences

  • Experience in microbiology (culturing of different organisms) and molecular biology (execution of the molecular work requires familiarity with sequencing).
  • Experience with large datasets, with PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction, and next-generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Data management skills and familiarity with the literature in microbiology related to the gut.

Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Physical ability to perform varied tasks, such as fine motor skills, challenging culture, and molecular techniques, with or without accommodation.
  • Mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents, and supplies, with or without accommodation.
