A Brief Overview

This role participates in planned research projects by performing research protocols with minimal direction and guidance from the principal investigator, program director or senior scientists. May exercise moderate discretion and judgment in the execution and interpretation of experiments, and of data derived.

The Cardiology Research Laboratory at CHOP is recruiting an experienced Research Technician. A Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related scientific discipline is preferred but not required. Candidates with relevant laboratory research experience and comparable education or training are encouraged to apply. This member of the research team will participate in translational cardiovascular disease research projects under the direction of Dr. Robert J. Levy, Director of the CHOP Cardiology Research Laboratory, and in collaboration with several other research teams at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Columbia University.

Laboratory projects focus on developing new strategies for treating heart valve disease. This position offers an exciting opportunity to participate in a NIH funded translational research project related to mechanisms that are responsible for the progression of heart valve disease. Laboratory experiments involve cell culture and molecular biology techniques. In addition, studies with rats and mice models of heart valve disease, that are approved by the CHOP regulatory committee for the use of animal, are a component of the research.

Experience with cell and molecular biology techniques is preferred. After initial training, the individual is expected to independently perform cell culture and molecular biology experiments, reporting to Dr. Levy. The technician will also assist with method development and validation, support animal studies, provide guidance for less experienced research personnel, and participate in shared daily laboratory operations.

In addition to their technical competency, the candidate should have excellent communication and organizational skills, including meticulous scientific recordkeeping, computer literacy, and the ability to work between projects.

General position responsibilities include assisting in maintaining equipment, managing hazardous materials, laboratory upkeep, and other general responsibilities in the laboratory's operation as assigned or directed, in order to meet the goals and objectives of the laboratory group.

What you will do

  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples with minimal supervision
  • Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes/ reports the data
  • Performs tasks that require knowledge of advanced techniques and lab equipment
  • Performs advanced calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas
  • May be required to modify scientific methods and protocols (in conjunction with PI)
  • Checks others' results for completeness and accuracy
  • May be responsible for training and mentoring new staff
  • May assist in the preparation of grants journal articles, posters and oral presentations
  • May perform routine and non-routine tests / experiments as needed
  • Maintains office, lab area, reagents, supplies and equipment
  • Performs routine maintenance on lab equipment
  • Coordinates schedules of tests & procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Conducts literary searches as required

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Required
  • At least three (3) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Preferred

SALARY RANGE:

$48,200.00 - $60,200.00 Annually
