Lab Technician Position: Molecular Methods and Culturing in Microbial Ecology and Evolution.

The Oliverio Lab (https://oliveriolab.org/) in the Department of Biology at Syracuse University is seeking a motivated, organized, detail-oriented research technician to work on the molecular-level activities of environmental microbes and perform experiments with synthetic microbial communities. Applicants with either a Bachelors or Masters are welcome to apply.

The technician will be responsible for:

  • Working with graduate and undergraduate students to maintain a lab space.
  • Purchasing supplies and maintaining chemical and lab safety standards for the lab.
  • Training students in molecular methods.
  • Growing microbial cultures.
  • Setting up ecological experiments with microbial cultures.
  • Performing DNA/RNA extractions from cultures and environmental samples.
  • Running established bioinformatics pipelines associated with sequencing data.
  • Developing figures, writing drafts of abstracts and manuscripts.

This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree required, masters degree preferred, in molecular biology, genetics, genomics and bioinformatics, or related field.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique, experience with microbial culturing and expertise in pipetting.
  • Interest in training undergraduate students and performing benchwork is required.
