Job Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, provides for the safety, health, positive behavior, accountability, supervision, and training for approximately 5-15 students of a particular floor/wing in an assigned dorm in the residential program. Performs a variety of duties to assist the students in developing the ability to function independently in a responsible manner.

  1. Supervises and monitors student behavior and location, including enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct. Documents and reports student discipline, behavior, and injury problems, following up to ensure appropriate and successful student outcomes per department policies and procedures.

  2. Teaches student good personal hygiene, appropriate behavior and independent living skills. Assists the student in developing good study habits and helps with homework. Teaches and assists students in caring for their dorm and personal areas, as well as assisting them with developing acceptable work habits, dining skills, grooming skills, and social skills. Ensures that students are properly dressed and clothing is clean and in good repair.

  3. Ensures the safety and security of students in their environment. This includes reporting any unsafe conditions found in the dorm areas to which they are assigned to ensure these conditions are corrected. In addition, administers basic first aid as needed and evacuates students in an emergency situation (this includes physically carrying the students in the dorm, if necessary, to ensure student safety).

  4. Supervises and participates in leisure and cultural activities with the assigned students. This includes participating in the lifting, restraining, and/or transporting of assigned students as needed. Communicates clearly at a language level appropriate to the age and maturity of the students. Counsel students and assists them in solving a wide variety of problems.

  5. Communicates with parents and staff on a regular basis regarding student needs and potential problems. Meets with parents and staff members to keep them updated and advised of overall student welfare.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Requires a High School Diploma, or equivalent GED, and three years of successful work experience providing supervision of children in a caregiving capacity. Prefer experience with special needs children who have developmental or sensory disabilities; or an Associates Degree and one year of experience providing supervision of children in a caregiving capacity. This position may require communication modalities dependent upon employment placement.
