Residential Care Counselor
Location: Brown University Health
Department: Residential Treatment Program
Position Summary
The Residential Care Counselor provides direct care, supervision, and support to children in a residential treatment setting. As a key member of the multidisciplinary team, this role helps develop and implement individualized treatment plans while ensuring a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment for all children.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and well-being of assigned children
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized residential care plans
- Complete initial assessments and treatment plans within 24 hours of admission
- Review and update care plans regularly based on observations and progress
- Supervise daily routines and assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) and personal hygiene
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of observations and treatment interventions
- Communicate care plans and updates with multidisciplinary team members
- Build therapeutic relationships with children and families
- Respond to behavioral crises using safe, least-restrictive interventions
- Maintain a structured, supportive, and therapeutic environment
- Participate in treatment team meetings, shift reports, and program activities
- Model appropriate behavior and interactions for children and families
- Support recreational and therapeutic programming
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 6–12 months of experience working with emotionally or behaviorally challenged youth
- Required certifications (or willingness to obtain):
- Crisis Management
- CPR
- ERS, Safety, and OSHA
