Join the City of Tallahassee's Building Inspection team and play an important role in protecting the safety and well-being of our community. The Residential Combination Inspector ensures residential construction projects comply with adopted building codes and approved plans while supporting quality development throughout the City.

What Youll Do:

  • Conduct inspections of permitted construction projects to help ensure work is completed safely and meets City standards.
  • Review construction plans and work with contractors, design professionals, property owners, and the public to answer questions and provide guidance.
  • Assist customers and community members with information about permitting requirements and construction expectations.
  • Inspect various building systems, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and gas components, to support safe and quality construction.
  • Work with supervisors and team members to resolve questions and ensure consistent application of City requirements.

Minimum Training & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED; AND
  • Eight (8) years of skilled or technical experience in the building, electrical, mechanical or plumbing construction trades; OR
  • Conducting inspections in one of the aforementioned construction trades for a governmental or regulatory entity

  • Must meet one of the following at time of appointment:

  • Registered contractor with the State of Florida and meeting City of Tallahassee competency requirements

  • State of Florida certified contractor

  • Registered architect or engineer with the State of Florida

  • Holder of a Standard Building, Residential Electric, Plumbing, or Mechanical Inspector license issued by the State of Florida

  • Eligible to obtain a Provisional Building, Residential Electric, Plumbing, or Mechanical Inspector license issued by the State of Florida

  • Licensure requirements after hire:

  • Individuals without a Standard Inspector license must obtain:

  • Standard Building, Residential Electric, Plumbing, or Mechanical Inspector license and

  • Standard One and Two Family Inspector license

  • Both within one year of appointment as a condition of continued employment

  • All other individuals must obtain:

  • Standard One and Two Family Inspector license

  • Within one year of appointment as a condition of continued employment

Salary Range

$21.6689 to $58.7999/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $36.7534/hour.
