Residential Plumbing Service Technician

A day in the life

Start your morning by reviewing scheduled calls and stocking your truck. You’ll greet homeowners, listen closely to their concerns, and thoroughly diagnose plumbing issues. From repairing burst pipes and clearing drains to installing water and gas lines, you’ll ensure every fix meets code and our quality standards. You’ll wrap each visit by walking customers through findings, options, and next steps—always with clarity and care.

What you’ll handle

• Diagnose failures across residential plumbing systems and equipment
• Present repair vs. replacement recommendations with clear explanations
• Assemble and install pipes, valves, and fittings with precision
• Service, maintain, and repair water and gas systems and related components
• Pressure and leak-test systems using compressed air and/or water for safety
• Repair fixtures and lines, including washers, burst pipes, and clogged drains
• Manage vehicle stock: track inventory, place orders, and verify deliveries
• Keep tools and equipment in top shape per manufacturer procedures
• Maintain and use safety equipment appropriately
• Perform additional duties as assigned

What you bring

• At least 2 years of hands-on experience installing, maintaining, and repairing residential and/or commercial plumbing systems
• Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and job specs
• Expert knowledge of water, gas, and sewage systems
• Working familiarity with state and local plumbing codes
• Skill with pipe cutters, threaders, soldering tools, and similar equipment
• Strong troubleshooting mindset and solution-oriented approach
• Clear, professional communication with customers and teammates
• Physical ability to lift heavy materials, work in tight spaces, and use tools for extended periods
• Commitment to safety and proper protocols
• Customer-first attitude with a record of high satisfaction
• Comfort using mobile apps/work management software for tasks and reporting
• Leadership capability to guide apprentices and coordinate with other trades
• Flexibility for weekends and emergency calls when needed
• Valid driver’s license with a clean record

Preferred

Active Journeyman Plumbing License. Additional credentials—such as backflow prevention and gas piping—are a plus.

Physical demands

• Lift 50 lbs routinely and up to 100 lbs occasionally
• Climb ladders; access attics and crawlspaces; work in confined areas; drive; push/pull/carry; use hand tools; perform fine, detailed work
• Ability to drive
• Work indoors and outdoors, including attics and crawlspaces
• Stand, walk, sit; talk and hear in person and by phone
• Use hands to handle/feel controls; reach with hands and arms
• Regularly stoop, kneel, bend, and crouch
• Regular exposure to extreme heat/cold and adverse weather (wind, rain, ice, snow)
