Description

Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Resource Specialist for Adult Basic Education, Part-Time in the College and Career Readiness Department. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Resource Specialist provides student support within the program, guiding students' transitions through ABE into the Gateway to College/Adult High School or GED program. The Resource Specialist initiates student contact to ensure student success within the program; provides career, admissions, and academic advising; counsels on attendance and other issues; researches and evaluates available community services in assisting students to remove barriers; and develops student persistence strategies.

This position requires a significant amount of time on the phone helping students with class registration and maintaining complete and accurate office and student records. A current knowledge of our Gateway to college, GED, HiSet, and Adult High School programs is needed, and time will be spent with others in the department and college to guide and support each student's path to success. This position requires in-person, phone, text, and Teams contact, including workshops and orientations, with students to provide career, admissions, and academic advising, evaluate available community services to assist students in removing barriers to learning, and to ensure student success.

Examples of Duties

  • Spend a significant amount of time on the phone helping students maneuver through learning settings, community resources, and class registration.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of our Gateway to college, GED, HiSet, and Adult High School programs and work with others in the department and college to guide and support each students' path to success.
  • Initiate student contact to ensure student success.
  • Provide career, admissions, and academic advising.
  • Research and evaluate available community services in assisting students to remove barriers to learning.
  • Must complete required training.
  • Assuming other necessary responsibilities and performing additional tasks as assigned by the Director, Executive Director, Chief Academic Officer, and/or President in meeting the needs of the program, department, division and the college.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field

Work Experience:

Minimum of one year in an educational or social service environment, or evidence of other appropriate experience relevant to the position is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous work within the Community College System, and particularly in programs focused on strengthening students' foundational skills.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time;

  • Good eye/hand dexterity.

Normal Working Hours:

A maximum of 25 hours per work week, as determined with the supervisor to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of this position
