The Tech Retinal Treatment Coordinator is accountable for the facilitation and related communication for a variety of day-to-day specialty duties. Individual will work to schedule retinal injections and lasers while maintaining an appropriate work flow. Coordinator is responsible for timely, accurate follow-up communication to physician and patients (when appropriate). When required, position will also provide technical support to physicians for the purposes of patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and continuing care. Has achieved the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedules intravitreal injections and laser procedures based on physicians plan/time frame requirement.
- Maintains intravitreal injection supply, inventory and responsible for ordering and tracking drugs.
- Initiates prior authorizations when needed for procedures/medications.
- Carefully and accurately charts communication with patients regarding cancelled appointments, no shows and rescheduled appointments.
- Reviews chart for procedure information and correct eye to be treated, alerts doctor of any discrepancies.
- Responsible for pre-registration duties prior to patients scheduled procedure.
- Accurately documents patient, injection drug and correct eye into PODIS system
- Accurately maintains correct and adequate inventory of drugs used for intravitreal injections and documents in PODIS.
- Responsible for maintaining and communication with companies regarding drug returns and/or replacements.
- Prepares electronic medical record by documenting history, medications and other pertinent information as needed.
- Determines patients visual acuity.
- Checks pupillary measurement.
- Determines intraocular pressure
- Checks muscle motility.
- Performs confrontation visual field.
- Performs slit lamp exams.
- Performs retinoscopy and refraction.
- Administers dilating drops when appropriate.
- Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacology.
- May be required to function as a technician in clinic as patient care needs dictate.
- The annual completion of assigned Learning Management System (LMS) courses is mandatory. Any individual who has not completed their assigned training prior to November 30th of each year may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Position requires a high school diploma (or equivalent). Must be certified at the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) level, with a minimum of two years' clinical experience. Must demonstrate competency in the defined content areas for a COA per HR policy #2.29--Technician Training and Competency
- Expectations. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, a strong customer service orientation, attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills. Strong computer skills are preferred. Typing skills of at least 35 words per minute are desirable.
