Revenue Assessment Specialist I
$42,919 - $47,210 (hiring range)
Learns and performs a range of tax assessment functions, supporting the accurate and timely administration of local taxes.
Revenue Assessment Specialist II
$49,684 - $54,652 (hiring range)
Employs a solid understanding of State and City tax code while executing a variety of tax assessment tasks to ensure the accurate and prompt administration of local taxes.


What You’ll Do

As a Revenue Assessment Specialist, you will collaborate with the Commissioner of Revenue's Office to manage tax assessment functions. Work assignments may include:
Revenue Assessment Specialist I

Tax Assessment Responsibilities
  • Conduct various tax assessments, including:
    • Business and personal property taxes
    • Business license taxes
    • Landlord and contractor license taxes
    • Excise taxes

Software and Technology Utilization
  • Learn and utilize designated revenue assessment software to process assessments.

Legal Compliance and Procedures
  • Conduct assessments in accordance with applicable state laws and city ordinances.

Collaboration and Coordination
  • Collaborate with the Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, and other City departments to ensure timely and coordinated revenue assessment processes.

Customer Service and Communication
  • Respond to inquiries from taxpayers and provide information regarding account details.
  • Assist with research to help resolve taxpayer or tax account discrepancies or issues.

Confidentiality and Integrity
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive taxpayer information.
Revenue Assessment Specialist II

Tax Assessment Duties
  • Conduct and complete various tax assessments, including business and personal property taxes, business license taxes, landlord and contractor license taxes, and excise taxes.
  • Assess business equipment, personal property, and gross receipts in accordance with applicable tax regulations.
Software and Account Management
  • Utilize revenue assessment software to process and manage assessments efficiently and accurately.
  • Maintain and update business and individual taxpayer accounts, ensuring all records are current and compliant.
Record Keeping
    • Prepare and maintain tax records, including the annual setup of assessment systems, tax class codes and abatements, and tax books and related documentation.
Collaboration and Communication
    • Collaborate with the Commissioner of the Revenue, Treasurer, and other City departments to ensure timely and equitable tax implementation.
    • Identify and resolve tax account discrepancies and issues through research and communication with taxpayers and internal stakeholders.
Compliance and Interpretation
    • Ensure accurate interpretation and application of State and local tax codes.
Confidentiality and Integrity
    • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of sensitive taxpayer information.

Minimum Qualifications

Revenue Assessment Specialist I
  • High school diploma required; associate's degree preferred; bachelor's degree in relevant fields desired.
  • Equivalent education, experience, or training may substitute for degree requirements.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software required.
  • Must demonstrate ethics and good judgment.

Revenue Assessment Specialist Il
  • Associate’s degree required; bachelor’s preferred in relevant fields.
  • Education, experience, or training may substitute for degree requirements.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software is required.
  • Must demonstrate ethics and good judgment.
  • Previous experience in tax assessment, accounting, data management, or government operations preferred.

Work Environment

The tasks are typically carried out in an office setting. This involves frequent use of computers and standard office equipment. There is also regular interaction with staff, various departments, and the public.
