RF Engineering Technician (Anechoic Chamber & Electromechanical)

Overview:

 i3 has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Technician to support the Naval Research Laboratory, Tactical Electronic Warfare Division. The TEWD's purpose is to protect the warfighter from emerging threats by advancing electronic warfare (EW) through simulation, testing and evaluation. Candidate will be heavily involved in the testing, analysis, and validation of radio frequency (RF) radio systems, as well as the active operation and maintenance of our on-site anechoic chamber. In addition to RF evaluation, you will perform precision electromechanical assembly, cable fabrication, and hardware troubleshooting—all while executing rigorous test protocols, adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and maintaining meticulous test logs and lab documentation.

 

 

Pay Range $64,000 - $105,000

The pay range for this position is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, geographic location, and any applicable laws.

Responsibilities:

• Chamber & RF Testing: Testing and analysis of radio frequency (RF) radio systems and testing/maintaining the anechoic chamber in accordance with established laboratory standards and test procedures.
• Electromechanical Assembly & Debug: Mechanical assembly of chassis, circuit card assemblies, and cables; debug and troubleshooting of electromechanical systems.
• SOP Execution & Compliance: Execute testing and calibration workflows strictly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), engineering test plans, and safety guidelines.
• Documentation & Data Logging: Accurately record, compile, and document test data, chamber calibration logs, non-conformance reports, and hardware assembly records.
• Process Improvement: Assist engineering staff in creating, reviewing, and updating SOPs, work instructions, and test methodologies to improve lab repeatability and efficiency.

Qualifications:

Required:  

• Associate’s degree in engineering technology, or equivalent vocational school certificate, formal technical training program, or military technical school graduation in electronics, RF technology, or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience.
• Experience with testing and analyzing RF components and radio systems.
• Experience operating, verifying, or maintaining anechoic chambers and associated RF measurement equipment.
• Proven experience following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), test plans, and maintaining detailed test records/data logs.
• Experience with cable fabrication, crimping, and general mechanical assembly.
• Experience assembling electromechanical assemblies, some of which are small/precision-scale.
• Experience soldering both through-hole and surface-mount components.

Desired:  

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology or related field.
• Five (5+) years of experience in an RF laboratory or electromechanical production environment.
• Experience drafting, redlining, or updating SOPs, work instructions, and formal test reports.
• Working knowledge of manufacturing and engineering documentation (schematics, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, BOMs).
• Familiarity with formal quality management standards (e.g., ISO 9001, AS9100, or ISO 17025 lab calibration standards).
• ISCET Certified Electronics Technician and/or ISCET Certified Radar Technician.
• Experience troubleshooting RF electronics, including transmitters, receivers, and antennas.
• Experience with manufacturing industry-standard software and laboratory test instruments (VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters).
• Ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and meet project deadlines.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while adhering to strict documentation and quality protocols.
