Summary Statement
The City of Boise is seeking an ongoing temporary Safety Specialist to support projects that help keep city employees, worksites, and the community safe.
This long-term temporary position offers flexible hours, up to 19 hours per week, and will assist the Risk & Safety team with chemical inventories, safety documentation, data entry, procedure development, review of safety data sheets across a variety of city facilities, among other projects.
It is a strong opportunity for someone with a strong technical background that is interested in putting their education to practical use, gaining hands-on municipal safety experience, and contributing to the City's mission of creating a safe and healthy city for everyone.

Applicants must be able to pass:
Essential Functions
Performs routine or repetitive tasks with specific instructions and set procedures. Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
Collaborates with departments to gather operational information; conducts site visits as needed to collect and verify safety-related data, inventories, and documentation. Assists departments with implementation of labeling, documentation, and procedural improvements to support safe work practices and regulatory compliance. Trains department contacts on how to use and navigate Risk & Safety software and SharePoint solutions.
Develops and maintains tracking tools, inventories, and structured systems to support program oversight, compliance monitoring, and operational efficiency. Develops and maintains inventories of safety-related equipment and resources; establishes and tracks inspection, calibration, and preventative maintenance schedules.
Creates and organizes educational, promotional, and reference materials to support employee awareness and safety training efforts; consolidates materials into ready-to-use meeting and presentation resources.
Organizes, migrates, and maintains electronic files and shared digital workspaces to improve accessibility, consistency, and knowledge management within the Risk & Safety division.
Assists with compiling reports, summaries, and compliance documentation; tracks project progress and provides status updates to assigned supervisors.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Coursework or degree progress in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, industrial engineering, data science or statistics, chemistry, or a closely related field.
Experience using Microsoft Power Apps, Power Automate, SharePoint, or similar platforms to develop workflows, tracking systems, or process improvements.
Experience in document control, records management, or development of organized filing and knowledge management systems.

Physical Efforts
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Also, the employee is frequently pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds and occasionally pushing/pulling up to 35 pounds. The noise level is occasionally moderate and rarely very loud. Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand/finger dexterity.
Working Environment
The work environment will include inside conditions, outdoor weather conditions, extreme temperatures, in wet and humid conditions, areas of dust, odors, mist and gases or other airborne matter. Employees work in/at heights and confined spaces. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to infectious bacteria, bodily fluids and chemicals. Navigates a variety of surfaces, including but not limited to uneven surfaces, slippery surfaces, stairs, ladders, and areas under construction.
This position works: normal business hours, but must respond to call-ins when accidents and injuries occur.
