Title: RN- Med Surg / Telemetry

Location: 
Macon Georgia 31201

Duration: 13 Weeks

Shift: 12hr Day Shift - 36

Shift Information: 7A-7P

Clinical Interviewing- Yes - Manager Approval to Offer

On Call, Call Back Requirements: None

Weekend Rotation: 6 shifts on a 6 week schedule (6 out of 12 shifts)

Holiday Requirements: Travelers will work 75% of holidays

Floating Requirements: All med surg / telemetry units



About Facility:
  • 637 licensed beds

Unit Information:
  • Beds: 20
  • Census: 20
Minimum Years of Experience required: 2 years

Will you accept a first-time traveler: Yes

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
  • Patients with acute or chronic kidney disease, including end-stage disease (ESRD), HD patients
  • Peritoneal dialysis patients (inpatient treatments done on the unit)
  • Post-op urology or renal- related surgeries
  • Co-morbidities common to med-surg population: diabetes, hypertension, infections, CHF, electrolytes imbalances
  • Medical management of anemia, fluid overload, and renal-related complications
Patient Ratios:
  • RN: 1:4-6
  • LPN: 1:4-6
  • CNA: 1-2 per shift
Required License, National Certification, Certs (BLS, ACLS, etc.), or other position specific requirements such as Driver's License and/or Insurance:
  • BLS, BCR (Basic Cardiac Rythm) are required
  • ACLS - preferred
  • National certification: Medical-Surgical certification or Nephrology Nursing certification - preferred
Skills required:
  • trach chare, chest tube management, PIV starts, glucomander, insulin drips, heparin drips, drips to titrate to HR NOT BP
  • Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills
  • Management of peritoneal dialysis (manual and cycler, training provided if needed)
  • IV insertion and care, central line management
  • Wound care and post op monitoring
  • Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation
  • Care coordination with interdisciplinary teams
  • Discharge planning and patient education, particularly on renal and fluid management
Support within the Department:
  • CNA: assist with VS, Glucose Checks, baths, feeding, ambulating patients, assisting turning patients, hourly rounding, transporting patients as needed (Hospital has designated Transport Team); obtain blood from blood bank
  • Receptionist/HUC: Unit secretary on unit 7a-11p; then house wide call secretary 11p-7a
  • Charge nurse - each unit
  • Phlebotomy: Most units are lab collect phlebotomy; nurses drawn from CVLs
  • IV/VAT Team: Not an IV team- do have a PICC team
  • RT, 24/7
  • Hospitalist, 24/7
  • Intensivist, 24/7
  • Telemetry monitoring/tech: Central Telemetry Unit
Technology/Equipment:
  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris
  • Med dispensing: Pyxis
  • Monitors: Phillips
Unit specific equipment:
  • VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova Glucose Stat Strips Cardiac Telemetry monitoring
  • Portable vital signs monitors (Dynamapp)
  • Bladder scanners, IV pump, portable oxygen system
  • Glucommander
  • PCA pain management
  • Suction machine
  • Use of admission/ discharge protocol for rapid turnover
  • Peritoneal dialysis equipment (Home choice)
Floating: If yes, where: All adult med surg / telemetry units in house

Orientation (facility and unit):
  • 1 day orientation with work on educational modules
  • 2 days departmental
Other notes:
  • Scrub Color: RN - Navy; LPN - Ceil Blue
  • Parking: Free: Have free parking around campus or can pay to park in parking decks
  • Unit Culture: busy but work as team
