RN – Neonatal ICU (NICU) Travel Nurse

Location: Charlotte, NC

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (High possibility of extension)

Shift: 3/12 Nights (1900 – 0700 | Clinical hours: 1845 – 0715)

About the Facility & Unit

Join a premier, 247-licensed bed Teaching Hospital and Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center renowned for clinical excellence.

Our Neonatal ICU features a 53-bed capacity (with overflow, averaging a daily census of 58 patients) operating under a strong culture of teamwork, trust, and accountability. You will work alongside a highly collaborative team with robust 24/7 support, including dedicated Charge Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Intensivists, in-house Residents/APPs, a dedicated IV/VAT/PCVC team, and Unit-Based Educators.

Position Overview & Patient Ratios

  • Acuity-Based Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 depending on patient needs (no formal acuity tool used).

  • Common Diagnoses:

    • Respiratory: RDS, TTN, Meconium Aspiration, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

    • Cardiac: Congenital Heart Defects (TOF, VSD, HLHS), PDA, PPHN.

    • Neuro & GI/GU: Seizures, IVH, HIE, NEC, Feeding Intolerance, Sepsis, NAS.

Key Responsibilities & Required Skills

  • Core Competencies: Maintain sterile/aseptic techniques, perform basic dressing changes, oral/nasal suctioning, foley insertion, and manage g-tubes, j-tubes, feeding tubes, and chest tubes.

  • Critical Care & Monitoring: Manage invasive lines (ART lines/CVP), titrate critical care vasoactive drips, and manage sedation/analgesic infusions.

  • Ventilation: Expertly manage standard ventilators, trachs, and HOFV setups.

  • Equipment & Technology: Utilize EPIC EMR, Alaris & Medfusion syringe pumps, Phillips monitors, Omnicell dispensing, PIV Ultrasound, Tecotherm, and MOMs Breast Milk Scanning.

  • Note: Prior experience with EVDs, Camino devices, CRRT, and the baby side of ECMO is preferred, but the manager is flexible.

Candidate Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of strong Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience. Must thrive in a high-acuity, fast-paced environment.

  • Licensure/Certifications: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license, BLS, and NRP.

  • Traveler Status: Open to first-time travelers (requires manager approval based on current staffing).

  • Radius Rule: Permanent address must be more than 50 miles from the facility.

Scheduling, Holidays & Floating

  • Weekend Commitment: Required to work 2 Fridays, 2 Mondays, and every other Saturday/Sunday per 6-week cycle (shifts can be grouped or split).

  • On-Call: No call requirements for travel nurses.

  • Holidays: Worked as scheduled (expectation is the Eve and/or Day after the holiday, plus the holiday itself; rotating every other holiday).

  • Floating: If required, travelers will float to Neonatal PCU or Gen Peds (floating to Pediatric CVICU or PICU will be as a "helping hand" unless you have prior experience with those populations).

  • Time Off: Requested Time Off (RTO) must be minimal and pre-approved; extensive RTO may require a contract extension.

Dress Code & Logistics

  • Scrub Guidelines: Navy Blue scrubs (solid navy or white long-sleeve undershirts allowed). Pediatric-friendly scrub tops are welcome. No competitor-branded attire.

  • Infection Control: Strict "Bare Below the Elbow" policy in nurseries. No watches, rings, or permanent jewelry (real or plastic). No artificial nails.

  • Parking: Free on-site parking.
