Department Overview:
OHSU Neurological Surgery maintains dedicated programs in brain, skull base, and pituitary tumors, spinal surgery, vascular neurosurgery, movement disorders, epilepsy, facial pain, complex spinal and cancer pain, pediatric neurosurgery, craniofacial disorders, hydrocephalus, spina bifida, spasticity, peripheral nerve disorders, and nervous system trauma.

Function/Duties of Position:
The Department of Neurological Surgery provides care to patients of all ages who have experienced neurological symptoms, neuro-trauma, or disorders of the nervous system requiring medical or surgical intervention. Diagnostic groups commonly cared for include: brain tumor, spinal tumor, brain injury, spinal cord injury, vertebral and/or spinal cord abnormalities, hydrocephalus, intracranial hemorrhage, craniovertebral junction abnormalities (CVJ), transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke, autoimmune disorders, Parkinson disease, seizures, headaches, episodic disorders, mental status changes, meningitis, encephalopathy, congenital disorders of the skull/spine/nervous system, and neurological problems involving respiratory compromise.
The Registered Nurse will serve as a Patient Care Coordinator with the following priority responsibilities: assessment and triage (including patient record review and monitoring of diagnostic results); risk determination and nursing care plan development; coordination with the medical team and interdisciplinary team members; patient education including engagement in the effective use of their medications; and evaluation of patient progress using population and evidence based approaches.

Department Specific Requirements (competencies, equipment, certifications, etc.):
- Understanding of pathophysiology of the most common neurological disorders with surgical treatment options and the patient medical and nursing risks associated with neurosurgical treatment.
- Documenting in accordance with billing requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
- ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
- Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
- Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
- BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate care of patients in an ambulatory neurosurgery setting
- Implementation of procedures and protocols for telephone triage and advice
- Knowledge (medical) of and application of evidence based practices for pituitary disorders (Cushing’s, acromegaly, growth hormone deficiency, pituitary-related tumors, etc.)
- Implementation of drug stimulation testing

Length of Orientation – New Graduate Nurse
- External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
- Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Residency Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for about 10-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
Length of Orientation – Experienced Nurse
- External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
- Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
