Job Summary and Qualifications

Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards, measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards, making or recommending necessary adjustments following hospital and nursing standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations.

Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.

Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

Responsible for the care and treatment of the neonatal patient from birth, attending high-risk deliveries in the delivery room, as well as in the operating room, to the continuum of care in the NICU, i.e., ventilator management, care and maintenance of central and peripheral IVs, medication administration, feeding strategies, and discharge teaching.

Follows the unit protocols and guidelines in promoting safe delivery of care and maintaining an infection-free environment for the neonate.

Provides supportive care to the families of the patients being cared for in the NICU.

Education and Skills

Education:

  • Associates degree required
  • BSN preferred
  • BSN required within 3 years of employment

Skills:

  • Professional Nursing Organization Membership encouraged
  • Experience: Minimum of one year level III NICU experience is preferred
  • Licenses, Registrations, and/or Certifications: Registered Nurse license eligible to practice in the State of Texas required
  • Current BLS issued from HCA approved vendor required
  • NRP required from an HCA approved vendor
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. course must be taken within 6 months of hire if no evidence of previous attendance
  • Cardiac S.T.A.B.L.E. course must be taken within 6 months of hire if no evidence of previous attendance
