Job Summary:

Provides professional nursing services to implement individualized patient care plans within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Utilizes the nursing process to deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient care for patients with complex and sometimes unidentified needs.

Setting: Inpatient Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Patient Demographics: Pediatric patients requiring critical care, including infants, children, and teenagers

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Minimum Education: Associate Degree in Nursing; Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Continuing Education: 30 hours every two years, with 16 hours specific to the area of practice
  • Minimum Experience: Specific experience may be required depending on the work area
  • Preferred Certification: National certification in PICU nursing is preferred
Licensure:
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Alaska
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Additional certifications as required for specific work areas (e.g., PALS, ACLS); must be obtained within six months of hire for new employees
Certifications:
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Additional certifications as required for the specific work area (e.g., PALS, ACLS)
Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate nursing practices against professional standards and regulations, setting short- and long-term professional goals.
  • Deliver timely and effective nursing care based on established standards.
  • Perform nursing assessments, interventions, and evaluations.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare providers to develop care plans.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices while considering safety, effectiveness, and cost in patient care delivery.
  • Operate advanced life-support equipment such as ventilators and cardiac monitors.
  • Provide emotional support and education to families regarding patient conditions and care plans.
  • Supervise LPNs, NAs, and PSAs in daily activities.
Support Staff:

Directs day-to-day activities of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Nursing Assistants (NAs), and Patient Support Assistants (PSAs)
