The school nurse is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services to maintain and/or improve the health status of students and/or staff enabling them to fully benefit from the educational experience. The school nurse performs a critical role within school health services by addressing chronic and/or acute health problems experienced by students and staff and ensures that all health services comply with Federal and State Laws and Standards. The school nurse provides assistance and care to sick and injured students and staff, maintains health and medical documentation for the school, performs medical procedures as necessary, and reviews content and material for health education, health promotion, and wellness.  This role includes providing preventive and screening services, health education, assistance with policy and decision-making as it relates to health, and immunization against preventable diseases. The school nurse provides staff education and training for responding to emergency situations, first aid, CPR, AED use, bloodborne pathogens, communicable disease, medication administration and student specific issues. In addition, School Nurse may provide skilled nursing interventions for acute and chronic illness, injuries, emergencies, communicable diseases, obesity, substance use, adolescent pregnancy, mental health, dental disease, nutrition, and sexually transmitted infections. The school nurse may delegate some of the essential duties to a health aid or other trained school staff as appropriate.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Administration of School Health Program: The school nurse addresses system-wide health services issues that affect the entire school population. The school nurse must be competent to function independently as they are often the only licensed health care provider in a district. Coordinate and participate in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, emergency health, and crisis plan policies and procedures in adherence to legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards of nursing practice. Develops and reviews school nurse budget for the district's School Health Services. Bills third party payers for services that qualify.
  • Care Provider: The school nurse provides assistance and addresses the health care needs of sick and injured students and staff. Develop a process to identify students with known chronic illness and special health needs. Create a comprehensive Individualized Health Plans (IHP) and develop Emergency Action Plans (EAP) as appropriate. Invasive procedure-delegation training and follow-up; instruct school personnel how to manage students with chronic illness.
  • Community Collaborator and Advocate: The school nurse functions as the liaison between the school and local health service agencies and medical providers. Interpret health mandates, recommendations, and trends and share as appropriate. Collaborate with other student services personnel to prevent health problems from becoming reasons for educational failure. Reports immunization data to county health agency.
  • Educator and Health Counseling: The school nurse provides education and health counseling to school staff, students, and families to promote optimum growth and development. The school nurse provides staff education and training for responding to emergency situations, first aid, CPR, AED use, bloodborne pathogens, communicable disease, and student specific issues. Develop and conduct in-service training for school personnel on health issues. Provide consultant service to classroom teachers in planning content, materials, and activities related to health instruction. Provide classroom health instruction when appropriate. Assist teachers upon request, and if schedule permits, with the instruction of certain health units. Development and training of staff that provides health services, including the administration of medication to students. Coordinate the establishment of guidelines, procedures, and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program for schools and staff.
  • School Health Knowledge: The complex role of the school nurse demands an understanding of the diverse aspects of school health services including preventive and screening services. Understand school as a non-traditional health care setting, school health law and policy, and special education legislation and services. Plan and coordinate screening programs including vision, hearing, dental, and kindergarten entrance. Detect health problems through observations, interviews, and analysis of records and document health data, nursing diagnoses, health plans, interventions, and results. Establish channels of communication among school staff to assure referral of and follow-through on pupil health problems.
  • Skills/Procedures: The school nurse needs to be able to competently perform, teach unlicensed assistive personnel, and comfortably delegate nursing procedures in the school environment. (Not all skills can be delegated, please refer to the Nurse Practice Act for more information) Basic skills include:  Medication administration, Injury management, Illness management, Provide staff training, competency evaluation, supervision, consultation on the administration of prescription and nonprescription medication at school (including emergency medications.)  School Nurse may provide skilled nursing interventions for acute and chronic illness, injuries, emergencies, communicable diseases, obesity, substance use, adolescent pregnancy, mental health, dental disease, nutrition, and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Responsible for keeping current in nursing specialty and career skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Represents Fort HealthCare in external and internal meetings and events.
  • Completes department-specific orientation and annual competencies for this position.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing plus Public/Community Health Nursing Course as outlined by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher preferred
  • At least 2 years nursing practice in Acute care and/or Pediatrics. If ADN expectation of completion of Public/Community Health Course within six months of employment required
  • School Nurse experience, Public Health nursing experience, NCSN certification. If ADN obtaining BSN within 5 years of initiation of employment preferred
  • Possesses excellent clinical assessment and nursing skills, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills. Able to effectively apply the nursing process to the school setting. Specialized knowledge and understanding of Pediatrics and school age growth and development including health needs. Able to communicate verbally and in writing with individuals with diverse learning skills, reading abilities, and comprehension. Able to recognize and respond to non-verbal cues and communication.  Able to adapt communication skills for all ages. Able to complete required clinical documentations and reports in legible handwriting or computer utilizing acceptable standards of medical definitions and abbreviations.  Ability to read, speak, write, and understand English well. Have ability to perform cognitive processes to interpret student data and condition and contact physician with changes. Function independently without direct supervision. Ability to apply appropriate nursing and /or emergency procedures within the scope of nursing license and physician orders if needed for the procedure; ability to operate computer software programs; ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with fractions; adaptability to change; ability to cope with stress; ability to prioritize work and effectively manage time. Able to drive in all types of weather to schools. Able to exceed expectations of students, staff, and parents with customer service and skills required
  • Current Wisconsin Nursing license, valid Wisconsin driver's license, current auto insurance, BLS Certification-must be able to complete upon hire required
