Unit Information:
o Beds: 28
Census? Average patients/day? 20-22
o Minimum Years of Experience required? 1 year MedSurg/Tele experience
o Will you accept a first-time traveler? Yes
Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:
o Mostly geriatric patients
o Cardiac: CHF, chest pain obs. No Cath Lab on site. If patient needs cath, will be transferred to St. Luke s MC.
o Neuro: seizure obs, stroke obs, TIA vs. stroke rule out, altered mental status
o General Medical: COPD, respiratory/kidney/liver/GI issues
Patient Ratios:
o RN:
Days: 1:4-5
Nights: 1:6-7, can go up to 1:8, but not common
o CNA:
Days: 1:5-6
Nights: 1:7-8
Required License, National Certification, Certs:
o RN: BLS, NIHSS; ACLS preferred
o CNA: BLS
Skills required:
o RN: Experience with above patient types, NG tube placement/management, foley placement/management, chest tube management, Pleurex and other drains, wound care, central line/ports/midline blood draws, cardiac rhythm interpretation
Drips (possible to titrate within set parameters): Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, Lasix, insulin
o CNA: assist with ambulation, patient ADLs, vitals, I/O, blood sugar checks. Can remove peripheral IVs
Support within the Department:
o Charge RN will take reduced patient assignment
o HUC until 2300
o Phlebotomy for peripheral lab draws
o RT 24/7
o Hospitalist 24/7
o OT/PT/ST during the day
o Centralized tele monitoring with tele techs, central monitor also at the nurse s station
Technology/Equipment:
o EMR: EPIC
o IV Pump: Alaris
o Med dispensing: Pyxis
o Monitors:
o Unit specific equipment: different lifts for patients, including ceiling lift
Floating: If yes, where?
o Could float and take patient assignment on other MedSurg units or anywhere in the hospital MedSurg patients are located, including ER hold, ICU, etc. Will only take a MedSurg patient assignment
Orientation (facility and unit) :
o NEO
o One 12h shift on the unit to learn the flow
Scheduling:
o Weekend rotation: Every other
o On call? Only low census. Could be placed on low census call for up to 36h per contract
o Holiday Expectations: 50% of holidays per contract
o Approval of RTO: to go through manager
o Shift times: 0700-1930, 1900-0730
o Schedule cycle: Manager makes schedule in 6-week increments and released around 3-weeks prior to schedule beginning
