Shift: Shift 12hr Night Shift (36) Shift Information 1900-0730 Clinical Interviewing- Yes/No Yes, send to manager for final interview
On Call, Call Back Requirements Only low census. Could be placed on low census call for up to 36h per contract
Weekend Rotation EOW
Holiday Requirements 50% of holidays per contract
Floating Requirements Could float and take patient assignment on other MedSurg units or anywhere in the hospital MedSurg patients are located, including ER hold, ICU, etc. Will only take a MedSurg patient assignment


 

Position Highlights

  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Minimum 1 year of recent Med Surg/Telemetry experience required
  • Average daily census: 24–26 patients
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday requirement: 50% of holidays during contract
  • Manager interview required

Patient Population

Primarily geriatric patients with a variety of medical and post-surgical conditions, including:

  • Orthopedic surgery (total hips & knees)
  • Urology (TURP, cystoscopy)
  • General surgery (ostomies, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colectomy)
  • CHF, COPD, respiratory, renal, liver and GI disorders
  • Diabetes
  • CIWA
  • IV drug use patients
  • Telemetry patients
  • Cardiac overflow (no cath lab)

Nurse-to-Patient Ratios

RN

  • Days: 1:4–5
  • Nights: 1:6–7 (occasionally up to 1:8)

CNA

  • Days: 1:5–6
  • Nights: 1:7–8

Required Certifications

  • Active RN License
  • BLS (Required)
  • ACLS (Preferred)

Required Skills

Candidates should have experience with:

  • Orthopedic and post-operative patient care
  • Telemetry monitoring & cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Continuous Bladder Irrigation (CBI)
  • NG tube insertion and management
  • Foley catheter insertion and management
  • Chest tube management
  • PleurX and other drain management
  • Wound care
  • Central lines, ports, and midline blood draws

Common Drips

  • Cardizem
  • Amiodarone
  • Heparin
  • Lasix
  • Insulin

Unit Support

  • Charge RN with reduced patient assignment
  • Health Unit Coordinator until 7 PM
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy
  • 24/7 Hospitalist coverage
  • Phlebotomy services
  • PT/OT/ST during daytime
  • Centralized telemetry monitoring

Equipment & EMR

  • EPIC (preferred)
  • Alaris IV Pumps
  • Pyxis Medication Dispensing
  • CPM Machines
  • Virtual Monitoring Equipment
  • Ceiling Lifts

Floating

May float to other Med Surg units, ER hold, ICU, or any area caring for Med Surg patients. Will only receive Med Surg patient assignments.

Orientation

  • New Employee Orientation (NEO)
  • One 12-hour unit orientation shift

Scheduling

  • Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Every other weekend
  • Low census call possible (up to 36 hours per contract)
  • Schedule created in 6-week blocks and released approximately 3 weeks in advance
