Summary:

Manages, supervises, and coordinates the nursing and patient/resident care operations of a specific hospital unit, nursing care unit or patient care clinic by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis.

Critical Tasks:

  • Ensures that patients and residents are comfortable and well cared for according to state and federal regulations as well as contemporary nursing practices.
  • Ensures exceptional and very highly responsive nursing care for all patients and residents through personal actions and through all actions by staff members for whom this position holder supervises.
  • Responds very rapidly to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
  • Ensures full Minimum Data Set (MDS) regulatory compliance while while coordinating fully with other staff members to ensure same.
  • Participates in department or unit quality improvement activities.
  • Selects, schedules, assigns, and evaluates staff, adjusting hours and shifts as necessary.
  • Orients staff members and assures that training and education needs of staff are met.
  • Coordinates unit or clinic activities and the work assignments of staff members.
  • Evaluates activities of unit or clinic to ensure patient/resident care, staff relations, and efficiency/quality of service.
  • Reviews and responds properly to all clinical data for individual patients and/or residents.
  • Directs the nursing assessment of all patients.
  • Observes nursing care and visits patients to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with physician instructions.
  • Assess and provide comprehensive wound care and treatment designed to prevent skin breakdown.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates unit or clinic policies, goals, and objectives.
  • Participates in infection control, discharge planning, utilization review, case management, and quality assessment activities and analysis.
  • Interprets and enforces department and institution policies.
  • Participates in the development and monitoring of unit budget.
  • Participates in appropriate department and hospital committees.
  • Ensures that all Unit Clerks directly supervised are fully capable, dependable and productive.
  • Orders or directs ordering of drugs, solutions, and equipment, and maintains records on narcotics.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints or refers unusual problems to superior.
  • Takes all steps and actions necessary to ensure full enterprise compliance with all state and federal regulations and medical standards and ensures that all employees directly supervised do the same without fail.
  • Performs all duties only within competency, certification and licensure limitations.
  • Performs all duties with the highest level of cleanliness and when appropriate, sterility.
  • Demonstrates ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish all tasks despite frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
  • Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program from a university or college; Bachelors' Degree preferred.
  • Registered Nurse Licensure in AZ or qualified Compact Licensure.
  • 2 years of experience in nursing and/or long-term care management.
  • Current and continuing BLS training and certifications.
  • Current State of Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
