The Road Maintenance division in the Snohomish County Public Works department will be filling multiple positions and creating an eligibility register to fill future positions as needed for six (6) months. Online Application
Complete and submit the on-line application. The minimum qualifications for this position are: A valid Washington State drivers license and High School Diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of training and or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Online Examination
Applicants who pass the minimum qualifications will be notified by email to self-schedule one of the examination times offered. This exam will be conducted online through Survey Monkey and will be scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at 9:00am and 5:30pm only. You will have 60 minutes to complete this online examination.
Interview
Applicants who pass the examination and are selected to advance to the interview phase will be notified by email with instructions to self-schedule their interview. These are currently scheduled for August 3-6, 2026. This is subject to change.

The PAT will include a drug and alcohol screening, medical examination and Physical Evaluation Fitness Test performed by a qualified healthcare professional selected by Snohomish County. This is a laborer position involving a variety of routine manual labor tasks. This includes frequent bending, twisting, and stooping, frequent lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, constant walking and standing. Physical exertion and vibration when operating tools such as: jackhammer, plate compactor, chainsaw, or exertion lifting objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
Welcome Letter
Candidates who have met all the required conditions for the Conditional Offer will be contacted directly and emailed a welcome letter. The welcome letter will include detailed information outlining the dates and requirements for your hire date, new employee orientation and summary of employment details.
Remaining applicants who pass the interview will be placed on the Eligibility Register to fill future positions as needed. This register will be active for 6 (six) months unless exhausted.

Employment Summary for a Road Maintenance Worker I:
Work Schedule: This is a regular full-time position, scheduled to work 40 hours per week. Your normal work schedule will be Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., however, this schedule will typically change to Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from around mid-February through approximately mid-November each year. You may be required to work occasional evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays and are subject to mandatory overtime and callouts at any time including working evening shifts for emergency conditions (i.e., windstorms, snow & ice, floods, earthquakes, etc.). You must be able to change work locations within the County with little to no prior notice.
Union Information: This position is represented by AFSCME Primary Agreement.
Probation Period: A 12-month probationary period shall be required for all initial appointments to County employment.
Position Equipment & Dress Code: Your position requires you to report to work with ANSI/ASTM approved steel toed safety boots. You will be reimbursed for your boots up to $300.00 with supervisor approval of the boot type and a legible original receipt/invoice clearly indicating the specific item(s) purchased. In addition, you will be required to wear other safety gear as appropriate for the work performed starting on your first day of employment. You will be provided with additional information at the time of a conditional offer.
Driver License Requirements: You must have and maintain a valid State of Washington Drivers License which is required for employment.
State of Washington Traffic Flagging Card: You must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Washington Traffic Flagging card within three (3) weeks of being hired. Snohomish County will provide training to obtain the Traffic Flagging Card.
First Aid Card: You must possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid card within ninety (90) days of employment. Snohomish County will provide training to obtain the First Aid Card.
Commercial Drivers License: You must possess or obtain a valid Class A Washington State Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and no disqualifying restrictions and possess a valid medical card within (3) months of the conclusion of a CDL school or training program assigned by the employer and maintain both while employed in a Road Maintenance Worker job classification. Snohomish County will provide training to obtain the CDL. Restrictions on pre-existing CDL licenses must be disclosed and will be evaluated for qualification.
Tardiness Policy: The Road Maintenance Division has firm attendance and tardiness policies.
Drug & Alcohol Testing: You will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Job Duties
BASIC FUNCTION
To perform a variety of unskilled manual labor tasks in support of road maintenance and repair operations. The Road Maintenance Worker-I (RMW-I) position is an entry level position, requiring the employee to obtain and maintain a Washington State Class A - Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within one year of employment and is subject to CDL random drug and alcohol testing and applicable federal and state regulations.

SUPERVISION
Employee reports to a lead worker, crew chief and/or supervisor as assigned. The work is routine in nature, and is performed under general supervision. Specific instructions are given for unusual or non-routine tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The work is performed outdoors in a construction environment in all types of weather. The employee is also exposed to a variety of conditions such as: working in ditches, slopes, trenches, excavations, and on uneven terrain and slippery surfaces. Employees are exposed to a variety of potential hazards associated with working near traffic and around heavy construction and maintenance equipment. Employees may be required to work occasional evenings, nights, weekends or holidays and employees are subject to mandatory overtime and call-outs at any time including working evening shifts for emergency conditions (i.e. windstorms, snow & ice, floods, earthquakes, etc.) The employee must be able to change work locations within the County with little to no prior notice.
