Job Description:

In this entry‑level role, you'll play a critical part in maintaining roadway quality, improving travel safety, and ensuring our community's infrastructure remains reliable year‑round. Ideal candidates are dependable, eager to learn, comfortable with physical work, and committed to supporting the County's mission through high‑quality maintenance operations. The department provides extensive training, including Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preparation, equipment operation experience, and cross‑training in asphalt, concrete, tree trimming, heavy equipment, and snow response.

Starting Salary:

Maintenance Worker I: $18.74 per hour

Maintenance Driver I (requires Class A CDL): $21.50 per hour

Additional $6.00 per hour when performing snow removal

Work Location North County, South County, West County, Mid‑County Districts

Work Hours primarily Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Mandatory 12‑hour snow shifts during winter weather operations

Key Responsibilities:

  • Repair and replace asphalt roadways and surfaces by: performing asphalt patching and crack sealing; preparing and compacting ground/surfaces for paving; repairing cave-ins, depressions, potholes and blow ups and striping roads.
  • Maintain, repair or install concrete structures or surfaces by: assembling, setting, and knocking down concrete forms; mixing, pouring, texturing and finishing concrete.
  • Care for and propagate plant life by: planting and maintaining flowers, shrubs and trees; mowing, raking and manicuring grounds; cutting and hauling away dead trees, stumps and shrubs; sowing grass or laying sod; trimming trees, hedges and shrubs.
  • Perform mandatory snow duty by removing hazardous snow and ice conditions by: identifying areas requiring snow and ice removal, applying salt and other chemicals, using a truck with plow or other tools to clear roadways, driveways and parking lots.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

EQUIPMENT USED:(Illustrative examples) dump truck, automobile, van, light truck: chain saw, drills, forklift, grinder, highlift, jackhammer, and various hand tools; riding and push mowers, trimmer, various heavy equipment, hand tools, dump trucks

WORKING CONDITIONS Balance, bend at waist; climb or work on ladders and stairs; exposure to dust/dirt, fumes, and hazardous materials; kneel, lift, push/pull, reach above shoulders, squat, stand/walk for long periods; work outdoors in extreme temperatures, ability to lift over 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED with a current, valid driver's license without driving restrictions. Prefer Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Additional Information

Applicants for this position must be physically able and willing to perform hard manual labor, work under poor conditions, be able to work overtime, possess a valid driver's license and their own transportation (public transportation is not available to most work locations) and have a safe driving record for the past three years.

Pre-Employment Process Requirements:

Applicants will be evaluated based on relevant education, experience, responses to supplemental questions, and other work-related information provided on the application. Resumes are supplementary and do not replace the required application.

All candidates will receive notifications regarding application status once determined. Status updates are provided via email and can be found within each candidate's Workday profile.

Responses that qualified candidates provide to the application questions will count as 100% of their final evaluation score. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. The five highest-ranking candidates will be referred to the Department Director/Appointing Authority for final selection.

Pre-Employment Screening:

Candidates extended a conditional offer must successfully complete all required pre‑employment screenings. These screenings include a drug test administered at no cost to the applicant by a certified laboratory and a background check evaluating the recency and relevance of the candidate's history to the position. Candidates must complete the drug test within 48 hours of receiving a conditional offer; failure to do so may result in withdrawal of the offer.

Mandatory Ongoing Testing - in compliance with federal regulations, employees with a Commercial Driver's License are subject to random, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion and return to duty testing.
