_Internship Term: Winter 2027 (anticipated start date: January 2027). This is a hybrid internship based in Farmington Hills, MI._
About the Team
The Robotics and Innovation team develops next-generation edge-connected driver assistance and automated driving functions, ranging from low-speed parking systems to Level 3 highway and urban driving capabilities. The team combines robotics, controls, perception, and modern C++ software engineering to deliver production-ready solutions. Engineers work closely with software, controls, safety, and vehicle integration teams while collaborating with external suppliers. We contribute directly to real-world features while building expertise in sensor fusion, estimation, and automotive software development. This role is ideal for students interested in robotics software applied to real vehicles and physical systems.
What you can look forward to as Robotics and Innovation Intern:
+ Design, implement, and test C++ software modules for perception, sensor fusion, state estimation, and motion-control systems.
+ Integrate and debug software on Linux platforms and vehicle prototypes using ROS/ROS 2 when applicable.
+ Support development of state-space models, observers, and advanced control approaches such as optimal control and Model Predictive Control (MPC).
+ Analyze vehicle and sensor data to evaluate and improve system performance.
+ Work within Git-based code review and continuous integration environments.
+ Participate in bench testing and vehicle validation, including interfacing with CAN networks, sensors, and actuators.
+ Document technical assumptions, testing results, and design decisions.
Your Profile as Robotics and Innovation Intern:
+ Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field (junior standing or higher).
+ Coursework in control systems and either dynamics, embedded systems, or electrical systems.
+ Proficiency in C++ through coursework, projects, research, or robotics experience.
+ Exposure to at least two of the following: feedback control, state estimation, vehicle or rigid-body dynamics, embedded systems, sensors and actuators, and/or electromechnical system integration.
+ Experience using Linux and Git (branching, commits, pull requests).
+ Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot controller, estimator, or system performance issues.
+ Hands-on experience with robotics or engineering projects; familiarity with ROS/ROS 2, MATLAB/Simulink, or Python is preferred.
+ Effective communication skills and willingness to work hands-on with hardware and vehicles.
