Fives Group is seeking a Robotic Automation Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking experienced Robotics Engineers with strong FANUC and NACHI programming experience, with particular emphasis on NACHI robotic systems and automotive MIG welding applications.
This is an open ended contract role. Candidates should be open to working onsite at locations in Ohio and Illinois. Expenses will be provided.
The ideal candidate will have the hands-on expertise necessary to take robotic welding systems from initial integration and programming through commissioning, troubleshooting, optimization, and production startup.
This role will support robotic arc-welding operations within an automotive Body-in-White (BIW) environment. The engineer will be responsible for developing reliable, repeatable welding processes while improving weld quality, robot performance, and overall production cycle times.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, program, and optimize robotic MIG welding paths on NACHI and FANUC platforms.
- Establish appropriate robot positioning, torch orientation, travel angles, and electrode stick-out for specific welding applications.
- Configure and adjust welding programs and process parameters to improve weld quality and address issues such as porosity, incomplete fusion, undercutting, and burn-through.
- Develop and maintain Tool Center Point (TCP) calibration procedures to maintain accurate weld positioning following torch consumable changes.
- Support robot integration and commissioning from initial setup through production launch.
- Troubleshoot robotic, welding, and system-level issues during commissioning and high-volume production.
- Establish and maintain programming practices and standards based on application and process requirements.
- Maintain organized robot controller backups, program documentation, and version histories.
- Work closely with controls, mechanical, welding, quality, and maintenance teams to resolve production issues and improve system performance.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Automation, Welding, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- At least 5 years of hands-on experience programming and integrating FANUC and NACHI robotic systems.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience with robotic MIG welding applications, preferably within an automotive BIW or Bodyshop environment.
- Strong understanding of robotic welding integration, commissioning, and production startup.
- Professional working proficiency in English, including the ability to communicate with engineering teams, equipment suppliers, and global partners.
