Position Information

The Recycling & Solid Waste Department of New Hanover County is currently seeking a Roll Off Truck Driver / Heavy Equipment Operator Zone 2 to join our team.

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Operates heavy equipment and/or roll-off trucks.
  • Directs the flow of traffic, interacts with customers to ensure understanding of landfill policies, procedures, and materials drop-off requirements.
  • Moves materials to appropriate locations.
  • Moves sand, mulch, and ash into place over trash.
  • Maintains Landfill roads, clears debris and fills in with gravel as needed.
  • Uses GPS as reference to further ensure lifts are made as even as possible and roads are placed in the correct spot, according to the GPS design.
  • Clean sites and remove debris
  • Perform complex, regular preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repairs on tools and equipment requiring welding parts, fabrication and equipment mechanical knowledge and skills
  • Provide continuous customer service
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level
  • Perform work during emergency/disaster situations

Located in coastal southeastern North Carolina, the New Hanover County Department of Recycling & Solid Waste oversees one of the state's most advanced integrated solid waste disposal systems. The Department operates a recycling drop-off collection system, a Household Hazardous Waste and electronic waste collection system, a RCRA Subtitle D landfill, Construction and Demolition Debris (C&D) diversion, and yard waste passive composting operations. The resulting system minimizes the use of land resources consumed for burying the waste we generate and minimizes the potential risks for contaminating the area's delicate environment.

Hours:

7:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, plus rotating Saturdays and holidays.

Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

Salary Information:

The hiring salary for this position is $41,249.00 - $54,665.00 ($19.83 - $26.28), plus a competitive benefits package. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and one year of related equipment operation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
  • Experience in the operation of landfill bulldozers, landfill compactors, excavators, articulated dump trucks, tractors, bush-hogs, front-end loaders, and motor graders
  • Ability to operate a stick shift truck
  • Experience in the operation of a roll off truck or tandem dump truck

What will make your application stand out:

  • Previous landfill experience or farming background is preferred
  • Experience as an extensive loader and roll-off truck driving experience
  • Good organizational skills and be a self-starter with a positive attitude

Licenses/Certifications

REQUIRED

  • Valid Drivers License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
  • Valid CDL Drivers License with straight drive designation
  • Farming experience is a plus
