Step into a day on the shop floor

Your 10-hour shift kicks off with a safety huddle and a review of railcar work orders. You stage materials, move parts into position, and set up select shop equipment and mechanical hand tools. As the team progresses, you remove and reinstall uncoupling levers, disassemble couplers, swap brake levers, and help jack railcars safely. You’ll perform basic cutting and limited welds under close supervision while sharpening your stick welding fundamentals. Throughout the day, you pitch in on shop upkeep and assist with supervised truck (bogie) repairs and AEI tag removal/updates. With each task, you build real on-the-job skills in railcar repair—working toward certifying railcar welding positions in 1G (flat) and 2G (horizontal).
