About the Job

An exciting opportunity is available for a junior scientist to join the Albert Laboratory at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The scientist will perform research using genetics, genomics, and molecular biology techniques. The lab investigates how genetic differences between individuals influence gene expression, cell biology and complex traits in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

80% Research and data analysis

  • Conduct complex, multi-step laboratory procedures based on written protocols or oral instruction from the PI or other senior researchers, using molecular biology, microbiological, or genetic techniques. Typical tasks include DNA, RNA and plasmid extraction, molecular cloning, DNA sequencing, gel electrophoresis, and yeast transformation.
  • Maintain, propagate, and analyze yeast strains.
  • Learn and operate high-throughput phenotyping equipment
  • Learn and employ a variety of experimental techniques including but not limited to CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering and flow cytometry.
  • Select and adapt methods to meet specific research needs and to assist in development of new laboratory techniques.
  • Maintain a detailed notebook, tabulate and graph data, and interpret results on all procedures independently.
  • Read relevant scientific literature as suggested by the investigation and identify relevant facts, techniques, and procedures from the primary literature.
  • Contribute to manuscript writing, generate figures, tables, and results related to the research, and write up the methods section and main results/findings related to the research
  • Assist in the preparation of data for manuscripts and grants.

20% Laboratory Coordination

  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of equipment, developing and implementing protocols, data management and analysis
  • Ensure lab safety and assist with chemical waste, biosafety, and reporting
  • Assist with ordering
  • Coordinate work schedules for execution of complex laboratory studies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree with a major in a biomedical science (Genetics, Microbiology, etc) or an equivalent combination of education and relevant research experience to equal four years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a microbiology laboratory, especially with fungi.
  • Previous experience working with molecular biology approaches (e.g. PCR, DNA extraction, cloning)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Strong computer skills
