Description

This opening is for Rule 9 Interns who are interested in working in either our Criminal or Civil Divisions. Rule 9 Interns may be in an externship receiving credit through their law school or may apply for the internship without receiving school credit. Students can select to work in either our Criminal or Civil Divisions. The job duties outlined below may vary based on which division you work in. Our Criminal Rule 9 Interns must have a valid drivers license and vehicle, as some travel may be required to outlying district courts. Our Civil Division Rule 9 Interns do not need to have a valid drivers license or vehicle. Applications for Rule 9 positions will first be considered on September 15, 2026, then on a rolling basis until positions are filled.

1L law students may also apply for unpaid internships at our office. Applications for 1L Intern positions will first be considered on January 18, 2027, and then on a rolling basis.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Snohomish County supports internship programs that provide work experience for students in an accredited post-secondary institution that is related to their course of study. The internship program is designed so that the student will have the opportunity to apply principles and theories learned in the classroom, gain new skills, explore a career path and be supervised and mentored by a professional in their field.

The student may choose to receive academic credit for their internship in accordance with the guidelines set by their school.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide internship opportunities for law students at the end of their first and second year of law school.

Job Duties

STATEMENT OF ESSENTIAL INTERNSHIP DUTIES

  • Handle infractions calendars, criminal arraignments, show cause hearings, criminal motions, and trial work under the supervision of a practicing attorney.

  • Assist with researching and writing appeals in Snohomish County Superior Court and the Court of Appeals.

  • Draft initial responses to post-conviction motions involving restoration of constitutional rights and vacating of convictions.

  • Handle Involuntary Treatment Act hearings, civil motions and supporting declarations.

  • Draft discovery responses and attend or conduct depositions.

  • Conduct legal research, prepare written work product for attorneys and clients, draft external communications conveying legal position.

STATEMENT OF OTHER INTERNSHIP DUTIES

  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - FOR RULE 9 INTERNS

Must be able to show proof of enrollment in an accredited post-secondary institution at the time of the Internship. If the Internship occurs during the summer, the student may either provide proof of summer or fall enrollment.

Must be a licensed Rule 9 Intern with the State of Washington in an accredited law program working towards a Juris Doctorate.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Law students must have completed their second year of law school (or equivalent credit hours).

  • establish and maintain effective work relationships with elected officials, department heads, associates, staff and the general public
  • analyze and propose solutions to legal issues
  • represent clients in judicial proceedings

SUPERVISION

Intern will receive direction from a licensed deputy prosecuting attorney as assigned. Assignments are made indicating generally what is to be done, the quantity of work expected, and any deadlines which are required to be met.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The majority of the work is performed in the usual office environment and judicial forums.

Healthcare Premiums

  • Regular full-time employees: If you work 35 or more hours per week, you will pay these monthly premiums for medical insurance. The County pays the monthly premiums for vision, dental, and basic life insurance.
  • Regular part-time employees: If you work between 20 and 34 hours per week, you will pay pro-rated monthly premiums for medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance. The Countys contribution toward the premium for an employee in a regular part-time appointment will be pro-rated in an amount equal to the F.T.E. percentage the employee is assigned.
