Summary

The Whatcom County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking applicants in our District Court Criminal Division for the Summer of 2026. Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Criminal Deputy, the Rule 9 intern will assist with one or more of the following, depending on the length of the internship: District Court arraignments, pretrial hearings, probation violation hearings and/or motion hearings. The Rule 9 intern may also research issues and draft responses to motions and may assist deputies with trial preparation and trial.

This is a paid Summer internship with a minimum 8 week, maximum 12 week, full-time commitment. Pay is $25/hr. This is an in-office position, not eligible for remote work.

  • This posting will remain open until positions are filled.
  • Supervisor: Assistant Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor
  • Hours of Work: Monday - Friday 8 AM - 5 PM
  • Work is performed in an office setting. Sits or stands for long periods of time. May occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Moves throughout the County's facilities. May be required to attend meetings or perform duties outside of normal office hours. Possibility of exposure to hostile and offensive language from the public. Uses appropriate safety equipment and follows established work safety policies, practices and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Be enrolled and in good academic standing in a J.D. program at an ABA-accredited law school; AND be Rule 9 eligible; must currently be a 2L or 3L in school.

  • Criminal Justice level background check must meet criminal justice and Prosecutor's Office criteria.
