Position Description:
Personnel employed in the classification are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and school related activities, in compliance with West Virginia Department of Education Transportation Regulations and Mingo County Schools
Job Summary:
The bus operator is responsible for safe operation of a school bus while transporting students and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards. The Bus Operator maintains order and discipline among students, ensures the mechanical readiness and cleanliness of the vehicle, and promotes a safe and respectful transportation environment.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Becomes thoroughly familiar with the contents of the West Virginia Transportation Regulations for school bus operators.
Posts in the bus a copy of the Regulations for Pupils Transported in School Buses and the assigned bus schedule
Performs required daily pre-trip and post trip inspections and report any defects immediately.
Maintain an accurate and current list of students assigned to the bus route.
Discharge students only at designated stops unless authorized by the principal or with written permission from a parent or guardian.
Allows students not assigned to the bus to board only with proper authorization from school administration or written parental permission.
Operate the bus on schedule and report delays or interruptions promptly to the principal or transportation director.
Maintains professional appearance and conduct appropriate for working with students and the public.
Ensure all assigned students are safely loaded before leaving school grounds
Maintain cleanliness of the bus interior and exterior as directed by the transportation supervisor.
Enforce student safety rules, including prohibiting students from extending any part of their body outside the bus windows.
Participate in and practice required emergency evacuation procedures.
Turn off the engine, secure the brake, and remove keys whenever leaving the bus unattended.
Ensure all required emergency equipment ( first aid kit, fire extinguisher, reflector / fares, chains, axe, body fluid kit, etc ) is present and in proper working condition.
Complete and submit all required reports accurately and within required timelines.
Follows and enforce the Mingo County Discipline Policy.
Remain available during emergency school closings or delays when required.
Reports all accidents, incidents or vehicle damage immediately to the transportation director.
Report mechanical concerns or needed repairs promptly to the transportation maintenance staff.
Follows all required railroad crossing procedures in accordance with state regulations
Maintains positive work habits, including punctuality, dependability, and professionalism
Performs assigned duties efficiently, safely and productively.
Participate in required training and professional development to maintain and upgrade skills
Performs other duties assigned by the transportation director or school administration.
Ensure the bus remains parked at the assigned location during and after school hours unless otherwise directed.
