POSITION SUMMARY
The Sacristan at Trinity Church, NYC, reports to the Head Sacristan and assists the sacristan team with all shared duties in the Sacristies and the Churches. As a team, sacristans develop, maintain, and use apps and systems (checklists, liturgical and lectionary resources, rotating scheduling, etc.) to support clergy, volunteers, and staff for all liturgical events. They assist in the planning, coordinating, and production of all liturgical events in the sacred spaces of Trinity Parish (Trinity Church, the Chapel of All Saints, St. Paul's Chapel, and Trinity Commons).
The payrate for this position ranges from $35.77 to $42.09 hourly. The schedule will include Sundays and 4 days during the week on a rotating schedule.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and coordinate all preparation details and execution through completion for Trinity Church and St. Paul's Chapel liturgies
scheduling and preparation of lay participants
coordination of staff
preparation of worship materials
ordering and preparing of space
Serve as Sacristan in regular and special services
organize and support clergy, musicians, other staff, and volunteers
keep track of service attendance
keep track of sacramental records
alert security if any concerning situations arise
Support volunteers for liturgical and para-liturgical functions
Communicate event procedures to all event participants and fill-in and assist as needed.
assist in recruiting, training, supervising, and supporting volunteers - acolytes, vergers, readers, intercessors, ushers, and greeters
assist Lay Eucharistic Visitors - provide supplies and record visitation details
Assist in the maintenance of all sacred spaces by keeping spaces clean and orderly and organizing and improving all processes and supply levels, storage, maintenance and ordering.
Participate in all staff liturgical planning and development meetings
to ensure the space and personnel are available and ready
to offer liturgical perspective
assist in printed materials
Coordinate walk-ins at Trinity Church and St. Paul's Chapel, and connect the appropriate person/departments to the needs as needed.
Oversee liturgical supplies procurement, and work with the Administrative Assistant for Sacramental Life and Membership for administrative and financial planning and execution.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Highly organized and attentive to detail.
Pastoral instinct when working with everyone, expressing a sense of inclusion, compassion, and hospitality to all.
Superior aptitude in technology (MacOS fluency, web apps, iPhone apps, Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets, MS Office, and Collaboration tools, etc.)
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Keen sense of time management, always on time and prompt.
Able to take and give direction and awareness of when either is appropriate.
Knowledge of Episcopal liturgy and lectionary and a desire to learn more.
Able to work flexible hours:
For on-site operations, the Sunday schedule can be between 7am to 8pm.
For on-site operations, Sacristans are scheduled to be "Sacristan on Duty" in the churches for one or more days per week.
There are many special events (marriages, burials, baptisms, etc.) that make the schedule variable.
Able to think on one's feet and make rational and good decisions on the spot.
Willingness to publicly read scripture in church services.
