MULTIPLE POSITIONS WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS RECRUITMENT

The incumbent is expected to perform duties within the Transportation & Parking Services Department necessary to provide safe transportation for the University community. This position serves as the primary contact for students, staff and faculty when calling the University's Safe Ride transportation service; dispatching drivers promptly and effectively to assigned locations. This position is also responsible for serving as a Safe Ride Driver; providing safe vehicle transport for students, staff, faculty and guests of the University, to designated properties owned / leased by the University.

Type of Recruitment Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia Motor Vehicle laws.
  • Some knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to motor vehicle operation.
  • Some knowledge of the proper procedures for operating and inspecting motor vehicles prior fo their use.
  • Some knowledge of MS Office or related software.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, as.king questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Navigational skills to read a map to locate addresses within designated service area.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn the names and locations of buildings, the streets and addresses within the Safe Ride service area.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with the public promoting a positive image of the University and resolving customer service issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to use automated dispatch software.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a multi-line telephone, tablet computer, 2-way radio, and/or mobile telephones.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow established parking regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and legibly complete routine forms and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly using sound judgment to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and complete work assignments in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate_hand and power tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to sit in a vehicle for extended periods of time.

Special licenses, registration or certification

  • Must possess a valid VA driver's license with an insurable driving record.

Level and type of experience

  • Some experience operating a motor vehicle.
  • Some experience in a customer service related position.

  • Basic experience driving a 12 - passenger van or similar vehicle preferred.
  • Some experience working as a dispatcher preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Driver's License. Must have and maintain an insurable driving record in accordance with university and state regulations. Must be available to work evening shifts, including weekends (Monday through Sunday). Must be able and willing to operate vehicles during inclement weather events, including snow, rain, and other adverse conditions.

Hourly (wage) employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 - April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.

The employee occupying this position may be required to work during a university closing as directed by his or her supervisor. Drug and Alcohol Testing is required.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate Salary range between $ - $14.62 - $16.50 per hour
