Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Safety Advocate functions in an observational/assisting capacity for patients who are at risk to cause injury to themselves or others. Provides services to meet the personal care, assistive, psychosocial and safety needs of assigned patients. Engages fully with each patient, providing a significant level of care and interaction, continually observing and maintaining patient safety. The Safety Advocate shall also contribute towards providing a secure and safe environment that allows patients, visitors, physicians, personnel and volunteers to deliver or receive quality services with minimal threats against their personal well-being and property. Other duties may include patrolling and monitoring facility premises, observing and reporting suspicious and unauthorized activities and unsafe conditions. May also be involved in access control, control of keys and emergency response and notification duties as assigned. Renders assistance and security related services to staff, physicians, patients, and visitors, including monitoring and restraining violent patients. Investigates and documents incidents relative to the facility and provides necessary liaison between staff and local law enforcement agencies.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Knowledge:

  • Suicide Precautions training completed within the orientation period.
  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques.

Skills:

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and effectively greet and relate to patients, physicians and staff.
  • Effective observation skills.
  • Ability to deal well with pressure and complaints.
  • Able to maintain professional demeanor in a high stress environment.
  • Ability to present oneself in a professional manner through appearance and conduct.
  • Ability to utilize PPE and equipment, e.g. patient bed, gurneys, etc.
  • Computer skills/familiarity.
