Our team is hiring a Safety and Environmental Specialist Lead to support Warehouse Support Services for the Navy Medical Readiness Logistics Command (NMRLC) in Williamsburg, VA
The Safety and Environmental Specialist Lead position serves as the on-site lead and primary point of contact for safety, environmental, and forklift compliance activities. This role implements and oversees safety, occupational health, and environmental programs in a warehouse environment. The Environmental Specialist drives compliance with applicable safety and environmental requirements, conducting hazard analyses and mishap investigations, delivering safety training, and supporting safe warehouse and equipment operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement and manage safety and occupational health programs supporting warehouse operations
- Apply safety and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, and standards to warehouse and production activities
- Apply environmental concepts, principles, and practices, including adapting safety and environmental practices where established guidance is not available
- Support compliance with regulatory requirements for hazardous waste management and disposal
- Conduct job hazard analyses (JHAs) and other analytical techniques to identify hazards and risk factors
- Perform mishap and incident investigations, including identifying causal factors through interviews, review of mishap sequences, environmental conditions, and contractor training records
- Develop and implement innovative safety procedures to minimize the potential for injury or property damage related to production activities and equipment operations
- Deliver safety training and train contractor personnel in safety concepts and safe work practices
- Support warehouse equipment safety, including forklift operations and material handling activities
Required Qualifications and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field, OR High School Diploma or equivalent with additional demonstrated experience performing safety leadership functions in a warehouse/industrial environment
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate standup and 4,000–‑6,000 lb forklifts
- OSHA Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO) certification
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience working as a safety specialist in a warehouse environment
- Knowledge of safety, environmental, and occupational health principles, practices, procedures, and standards
- Knowledge of environmental concepts, principles, and practices
- Familiarity with chemical, biological, and ecological concepts and risks, with the ability to adopt practices where relevant guidance is not established
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to hazardous waste management and disposal
- Knowledge of job hazard analysis and mishap investigation techniques sufficient to identify causal factors
- Skill in developing innovative safety procedures to reduce the risk of injury or property damage
- Knowledge of safety training concepts and the ability to train contractor personnel
Security Requirements
Valid Driver’s License; All NMRLC contractor employees must be U.S. citizens and maintain a favorable federal suitability determination (typically NACI with SF‑85/SF‑85P) sufficient to obtain and retain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) for installation, system, and facility access. Continued eligibility is required throughout contract performance, and loss of CAC or suitability status may result in removal from the contract.

- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST)
- Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification
- Forklift Train-the‑Trainer or Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) Instructor certification
Preferred Skills
- Experience supporting DoD or Federal warehouse, logistics, or industrial operations
- Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1910, including material handling and hazardous materials standards
- Experience developing and maintaining forklift training, evaluation, and certification programs
- Experience supporting hazardous materials handling, spill response, and environmental compliance
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for training delivery, incident reporting, and audit support
- Experience supporting safety inspections, compliance audits, and corrective action tracking
- Ability to work independently as the site safety authority while coordinating with government stakeholders
