Safety Coordinator
Metals USA has an immediate opening for a Safety Coordinator in the Waggaman, LA facility. The Safety Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the working conditions of the entire facility to ensure that all activity is compliant with local, state and federal safety regulations. The Safety Coordinator enforces company health and safety guidelines, inspects workspaces and products to ensure compliance with safety standards and provides workplace safety training.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitates compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) guidelines. Implements OSH policies and develops programs to ensure enforcement of OSH policies.
- Trains employees in all safety procedures and ensures daily adherence with procedures. Leads and manages the required daily, weekly and monthly training.
- Designs methods for appraising safety conditions in the warehouse and office.
- Inspects working conditions and equipment to ensure all products and activities are compliant with safety guidelines as required by OSH and RSAC. Recalls defective and unsafe products and machinery.
- Directs accident investigation procedures, investigates safety violation, determines root causes maintains records of safety-related incidents and proposes corrective actions.
- Collaborates with managers to monitor compliance and safety issues; intervenes in unsafe activities and operations.
- Oversee the use of dangerous chemicals and machinery and determines potential safety risk.
- Conducts risk assessments and enforces preventative measures.
- Coordinates with HR to conduct new employee safety orientation.
- Oversees workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees' safety.
- Suggests revisions to production schedules and employee activity that does not meet health and safety codes.
- Orders personal protective equipment (PPE), safety equipment, and supplies for the workplace.
- Facilitates emergency drills as required to maintain employee readiness.
- Consults with management regarding the implementation of new safety procedures as mandated by company, local, state and federal agencies.
- Assists HR with the workers compensation claim investigation and management.
- Assists the Safety Director, Regional Safety Manager, HR and legal departments to address any health and safety related personnel issues.
- Comply with company and OSHA safety policies and safe work practices.
- Liaises with and reports to official regulatory bodies on OSH matters.
- Regular and predictable attendance is required to perform the duties of a safety coordinator as this is hands-on position.
- Adheres to Reliance's Code of Conduct as well as customer confidentiality requirements.

Physical Demands:
Occupation requires physical activity more than 75% of the time (> 7.0 hours per day)
- Stand, walk, sit, handling/fingering, reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel or bend
- Lift, carry, push and/or pull 51 -- 100 lbs. with assistance
- Demonstrated manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination
- Time will be spent on the job-site floor monitoring & inspecting conditions
- Job Site may be hazardous or pose serious threat in emergency situations
Other Physical Requirements:
- Must wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Steel-toed boots and high visibility clothing
- Hard hats with chin strap; chin strap must be worn at all times while in the warehouse
- Protective eyewear
- Hand protection
- Arm guards/sleeves
- Hearing protection if required by the hearing conservation program
Work Environment:
May be exposed to some of the following working conditions.
- Environmental temperature changes hot & cold, rain & snow, wet & dry
- Working inside and outside of an industrial warehouse
- Moderate to loud noise levels
- Vibration
- Oils, dust, fumes and metallic particles
- Day and night shifts
- Local travel to satellite facilities will be required
