Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

  • Develop, write, implement, and update the company's safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as owner contract requirements.
  • Provide leadership and oversight to all safety staff, including Safety Managers, Safety Coordinators, and project-level safety professionals.
  • Conduct regular field visits to active construction sites to assess safety compliance, verify safe work practices, and ensure policies are being effectively implemented.
  • Lead corporate and project-specific risk assessments, identify hazards, and ensure corrective actions are executed.
  • Identify areas of opportunity for safety improvement, conduct root-cause analysis, and make strategic recommendations to leadership and project teams.
  • Mentor and educate construction personnel on safety requirements, best practices, and safe execution related to construction means and methods.
  • Oversee development, delivery, and tracking of safety training programs for all staff.
  • Manage companywide incident investigations, OSHA recordkeeping, and reporting requirements.
  • Build strong working relationships with project teams, trade partners, and clients to support proactive and collaborative safety management.
  • Lead internal safety audits and support third-party or owner safety reviews.
  • Assist in the creation and review of safety-related content for bid proposals, preconstruction efforts, and new project onboarding.
  • Participate in executive-level planning to integrate safety into operational strategy.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Conduct jobsite audits, hazard analyses, and detailed assessments of ongoing construction activities.
  • Evaluate subcontractor safety plans and verify they meet company and contract standards.
  • Lead companywide safety meetings and specialized safety workshops.
  • Provide timely safety performance reporting to executive leadership.
  • Oversee the review and approval of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task plans, and high-risk work procedures.
  • Collaborate with project leaders to develop site-specific safety strategies, especially for complex or high-risk scopes.
  • Implement systems to track safety metrics, leading indicators, and trends to drive continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies such as OSHA during inspections or investigations.
  • Ensure consistent application of safety policies across all divisions and project types.

The Successful Applicant

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate's degree or greater in Safety is preferred
  • 8 years of experience in construction
  • High School diploma or GED required

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred; a combination of experience and education may be considered.
  • 10-15+ years of safety experience in construction, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or director-level role.
  • Deep understanding of construction operations, methods, sequencing, and high-risk activities.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence behavior, and implement change across multiple projects or divisions.
  • Experience writing safety policies, procedures, and training materials.
  • Strong skills in communication, investigation, conflict resolution, and coaching.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to maintain an acceptable MVR.

DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS

  • Completion of Industrial Training International's Lift Director & Critical Lift Planning Course
  • OSHA 500 or OTI certified
  • HAZWOPER
