The role
The SHE Intern supports the site Safety, Health, and Environmental team in maintaining a safe, compliant, and continuously improving manufacturing environment. A major focus of this internship will be supporting construction and capital project activities, ensuring safety expectations are met during active project work across the site.
This role provides hands‑on exposure to industrial safety, construction safety, environmental compliance, and capital project execution within a high‑volume food manufacturing facility.
This internship provides direct exposure to real construction and capital projects, not simulated work. Interns are treated as part of the project team and gain experience critical for future roles in plant safety, EHS engineering, or manufacturing leadership.
What you'll be responsible for
Support active construction, capital, and improvement projects from a SHE perspective
Participate in project safety planning, risk assessments, and pre‑task reviews
Assist with contractor safety management, including:
Contractor onboarding and safety orientations
Verification of permits, training, and required documentation
Field observations of contractor work activities
Conduct construction safety walkdowns, identifying hazards and improvement opportunities
Support safe execution of:
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
Hot work
Confined space
Elevated work
Traffic management and barricading
Track and help close project‑related safety actions
Assist with incident investigations, near‑miss reviews, and corrective action tracking
Participate in shop‑floor safety audits, observations, and Gemba walks
Support machine safety, ergonomic assessments, and behavior‑based safety activities
Help prepare and deliver toolbox talks, project‑specific safety messaging, and visuals
Support environmental inspections and waste tracking
Assist with compliance documentation, permits, and records
Help collect data for site SHE KPIs, trends, and reporting
Support SHE‑related improvement initiatives tied to:
Construction and equipment installations
Contractor safety
Incident reduction
Machine guarding
Environmental footprint reduction
Complete one defined capstone project, preferably tied to a construction or capital improvement effort, with a final presentation to site leadership
Maintain SHE records, action logs, and inspection documentation
Support audit and inspection preparation (internal and external)
Assist with training records and compliance tracking
We're looking for someone who
Currently pursuing a degree in:
Safety Engineering
Occupational Safety & Health
Environmental Science
Industrial / Mechanical / Civil Engineering
Related technical discipline
Strong interest in manufacturing and project safety
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment
Interest in pursuing a career in manufacturing SHE or engineering leadership
Coursework or experience related to construction safety or engineering projects
Demonstrates initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
Can work independently and as part of a team.
Possesses strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
Is proficient with Microsoft Office applications or can quickly learn new systems.
Values collaboration, clarity, and low-ego ways of working.
