Safety ManagerLocation: Blacksburg, VirginiaStart Date: ASAPDuration: 12-18 MonthsEmployment Type: 1099 ContractorCompensation Pay Rate: $50-$54 per hour Per Diem: Not available Pay Frequency: WeeklySchedule Hours: 7:00 AM-5:30 PM Schedule: Monday-Thursday, four 10-hour shifts Additional Hours: Occasional Friday work based on project needs Shift: Day ShiftProject OverviewSheakley is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to provide on-site safety leadership for a large-scale commercial higher education construction project in Blacksburg, Virginia.This role will primarily support mechanical, plumbing, and underground utility operations throughout multiple phases of construction. The Safety Manager will partner closely with project leadership, field supervision, subcontractors, and craft personnel to identify hazards, strengthen compliance, and ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.Primary construction activities include:Underground utility installationHydronic piping systemsCommercial plumbing installationEquipment setting and installationPrefabricated rack installationMechanical system start-up and commissioningSubcontractor coordination within an active construction environmentThis is a field-focused position requiring consistent site presence, strong communication skills, and the ability to proactively address safety concerns before they result in incidents or project delays.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide daily safety oversight for mechanical, plumbing, utility, and equipment installation activitiesConduct routine jobsite inspections, safety audits, and field observationsEvaluate planned work activities and identify hazards before work beginsReview and support job hazard analyses, pre-task plans, and site-specific safety proceduresMonitor contractor and subcontractor compliance with OSHA and project safety requirementsLead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and field safety discussionsDocument safety observations, corrective actions, and compliance concernsTrack corrective actions through completion and escalate unresolved hazards when necessarySupport incident, injury, near-miss, and property damage investigationsAssist with identifying root causes and developing preventative measuresCollaborate with project management and field supervision to resolve safety concernsPromote accountability, hazard awareness, and continuous improvement across the projectMaintain accurate safety documentation and reportingRequired Qualifications OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification Commercial construction safety experience Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards Experience conducting jobsite inspections and safety audits Ability to recognize hazards and implement effective corrective actions Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work full-time on-site in Blacksburg, Virginia Comfortable working around active mechanical, plumbing, utility, and equipment installation activitiesPreferred Qualifications OSHA 500 Certification CHST Certification CPR and First Aid Certification Experience supporting mechanical or plumbing contractors Experience with underground utilities and hydronic piping systems Familiarity with equipment setting, prefabricated rack installation, and commissioning activities Previous experience on higher education, institutional, or large commercial construction projectsCore CompetenciesConstruction Safety ManagementOSHA ComplianceHazard Recognition and MitigationMechanical and Plumbing SafetyUnderground Utility SafetyJob Hazard AnalysisIncident InvestigationSafety Audits and InspectionsContractor and Subcontractor CoordinationRisk AssessmentCorrective Action ManagementField LeadershipDocumentation and ReportingSafety Training and CommunicationIdeal CandidateThe ideal candidate is a confident, field-oriented safety professional who can effectively balance compliance, communication, and production demands.
