Position Overview: The overall function of the Safety Officer is to develop and implement programs and procedures to continuously improve the safety culture of the company. This position will report to the Director, HR & Safety.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops, analyzes, and reports division metrics regularly to ensure continuous improvement
- Identifies, develops, and delivers safety training to employees, foremen, and superintendents via on-site and classroom regarding topics such as Fall Protection, Rigging, Lead Exposure, Flagging, Lifting/Back Safety, First-Aid/CPR, Safe Driving, Personal Protective Equipment, etc.
- Promotes and influences safety awareness through communication and training programs
- Design and implement programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease, injuries, and accidents
- Conducts regular on-site safety inspections of workplace environment, equipment, and practices, and provides coaching on best practices
- Conducts comprehensive and effective accident investigations to determine root causes, and uses the findings to recommend prevention procedures
- Monitors company compliance with state and federal standards regularly, and implements plans to meet those standards when necessary
- Serves as safety consultant on construction planning projects when required
- Develops and maintains emergency response plans and procedures
- Develops pre-job safety training meetings and updates toolbox talks
- Develops new-employee orientation safety materials
- Update and maintain Safety Handbook according to industry standards
- Develop and maintain JSA (Job Safety Analysis) for all job titles
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, preferred
- 4 years' safety experience in the construction industry
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
- CMESH Certification Preferred
- OSHA 10 & 30-hour in construction certification
- First Aid/CPR certified
- Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record, CDL Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to maintain confidentiality in matters involving security and/or personnel issues
- Ability to recognize known/potential hazards and exposures and recommend corrective actions, if necessary
- Demonstrated ability to drive change and successfully lead and implement change activities
- Ability to present and communicate safety topic training to small and large audiences
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and standard industry practices are necessary, specifically regarding construction safety
- Excellent computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Effective critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Strong and effective leadership, collaboration, coaching/training, motivational, influencing, negotiating, and selling skills
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future
- Must be able to follow all company policies and procedures
- Ability to respond to emergencies, if needed
Physical Demands:
- Ability to wear PPE
- Ability to sit for long periods of time while driving between job sites
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to climb up and down from equipment and/or terrain
- Must be able to work from heights, when required
- Ability to travel. Overnight stay is minimal, but required at times
- Able to stand, kneel, squat, bend, stoop, twist, push, pull, climb, and stretch regularly while performing the essential functions of the job
- Able to push and pull with hands and arms and move repetitively, when necessary
- Able to be alert and cognitive of multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including awareness of other employees, subcontractors, machinery, equipment, and moving traffic when applicable
- Must have good visual and auditory physical capabilities in order to manage sights and sounds in a hazardous environment
- Must be able to drive for short and long distances
Environmental Working Conditions:
- Exposure to all outside construction-type environmental factors, including heat, cold, inclement weather, insects, plants, dust/earth components, grease, all terrain types, etc.
- Office environment is also required
