Position Summary
The Safety Services Staff is responsible for providing a safe and secure campus environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors. The Safety Services Staff performs safety, loss prevention, conducts regular vehicular and foot patrols and responds to emergency and non-emergency situations, renders assistance as appropriate, and makes reports. The Safety Services Staff enforces College parking and other College regulations and provides directions and information. The Safety Services Staff is instrumental in campus safety through proactive safety efforts, such as identifying hazards, making building visits, checking safety equipment, and having positive interaction with students, faculty, staff, and guests.
Essential Job Functions
- Provides campus security to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property of the College and responds to the needs and requirements of students, faculty, staff and visitors. Serves the interests of the College while generating positive security awareness and relationship building.
- Promotes a positive image of the College by providing directions and information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus regarding campus locations, facilities, and activities, and rendering such assistance as requested within capability to provide. Proactively promotes safety and security by demonstrating, communicating and delivering services through daily interactions.
- Maintains a safe and secure campus by regularly traveling through assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle, observing for unauthorized personnel or activities, enforcing College rules, regulations and policies, and reporting violations to the Chief of Safety Services, checking doors and locks for proper operation, and securing and locking buildings and windows in order to minimize and deter the occurrence of crime.
- Supports the Office of Safety Services by assisting with the key distribution and access control process on campus in keeping with the Building Access Control Procedures; troubleshooting power panels to maintain security of the system; monitoring the surveillance camera system including review and cataloging footage as may be necessary; and assisting with the production and distribution of campus identification cards and maintaining a photograph database of staff and students.
- Ensures that College policies and procedures related to safety and security are followed.
- Effectively provides security for all College assets, including building and property security. Reduces the potential for injury, loss of life, property theft, and/or destruction of property by conducting area checks for potentially dangerous or unsafe areas, buildings, and conditions, (e.g., inoperative lighting, unlocked doors, insecure stairway railing, etc.), routinely inspecting fire extinguishers, and making on-the-spot corrections if possible or reporting the conditions for correction.
- Enforces campus parking regulations as directed by being knowledgeable of the regulations, rendering assistance as needed and preparing reports regarding on-campus accidents.
- Responds to incidents of crime against people, against property, interacts compassionately with victims to minimize impact, provides information on available resources, investigates, thoroughly, accurately, and professionally documents incidents, and makes timely reports of campus complaints, and files safety deficiencies, personal accidents/injuries, and crime and security incidents. Provides input for annual CLERY report.
- Escorts College staff with cash deposits on campus or to the local bank.
- In an emergency situation, enforces College procedures and directs local fire, medical, or law enforcement to the scene.
- Upon notification of an emergency, responds immediately and proceeds directly to the site, ascertains the nature of the emergency/injury, rendering first aid as priorities dictate, determining the need for additional medical attention, contacting the appropriate agency/office to facilitate emergency medical attention, remaining with the injured person(s) until relieved by an appropriate authority, and preparing and submitting a detailed report.
- Responds to weather, fire, hazardous materials, medical, and security emergencies as well as natural disasters, by assessing the situation, taking mitigation action to protect lives, property, and the environment, notifying building occupants to take shelter during severe weather conditions, activating building lock-downs as necessary, and helping to ensure evacuation of buildings as appropriate during emergencies (e.g., fire, bomb threat, etc.).
- Stores and maintains a log of all items found or turned in as lost property and disposes of abandoned property as outlined in the procedures.
- Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
- Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Chief of Safety Services or designee for a wide array of topics, such as the Clery Act, Title IX, report writing, communications, fire alarm systems, sprinkler and standpipe systems, hazardous materials, incident command, etc.
- Contributes to the overall success and morale of the Office of Safety Services by adhering to the Safety Policy and Procedures Manual and performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned in a professional manner.
Requirements
- High school diploma and proof of successful completion of police academy training (validated via an academy certificate or transcript) and/or an Associate's degree.
- Five or more years of experience in law enforcement, criminal justice or security enforcement, required.
- Concealed Pistol License or certified to carry a firearm concealed (i.e., Certified Law Enforcement Officer).
- Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
- The scope of the position requires occasional weekend and evening work, providing oversight of the activities of three shifts.

The employee may be frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, and may be exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; vibration; and other dangerous situations. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.
The position requires travel throughout campus, including stairways in buildings. The nature of this job requires the mental and physical ability to respond quickly to events and emergency situations throughout campus.
