Position: Safety Specialist

Location: Myrtle Beach, SC

Salary: $55,000-$75,000


Position Summary

The Safety Specialist supports the Safety Manager in maintaining a safe, compliant, and productive work environment across underground utility construction projects. This role assists with field safety inspections, employee training, incident investigations, and regulatory compliance while promoting a strong safety culture throughout the organization.


Key Responsibilities

Field Safety


+ Conduct routine jobsite inspections and safety observations.

+ Identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.

+ Assist with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), pre-task plans, and toolbox talks.

+ Monitor compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.

+ Support Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety programs.


Training & Development


+ Conduct new hire orientations and safety training.

+ Reinforce PPE, trenching and excavation, confined space, and equipment safety requirements.

+ Maintain training records and compliance documentation.


Incident Management


+ Assist with incident, injury, and near-miss investigations.

+ Gather photos, statements, and documentation.

+ Track corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.


Compliance & Reporting


+ Maintain OSHA and company-required safety records.

+ Assist with safety audits and inspections.

+ Support preparation of safety reports and metrics.

+ Ensure required permits, signage, and postings are displayed on job sites.


Safety Culture


+ Promote safe work practices and employee engagement.

+ Encourage reporting of hazards and safety concerns.

+ Serve as a visible advocate for the company’s safety-first culture.


Qualifications

Education


+ Associate degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.


Experience


+ 1–3 years of construction safety experience, preferably in underground utilities or heavy civil construction.

+ Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 standards.


Skills


+ Strong communication and organizational skills.

+ Detail-oriented with the ability to document findings accurately.

+ Proficient in Microsoft Office.

+ Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

+ Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required.


Certifications

Required: OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification

Preferred: First Aid/CPR Certification

Physical Requirements


+ Ability to walk, stand, climb, and work on active construction sites for extended periods.

+ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

+ Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.


Work Environment


+ Primarily field-based with travel between regional job sites.

+ Occasional office work for reporting, documentation, and meetings.
