Job Title: Safety Specialist

Job Description

The Safety Specialist plays a critical role in promoting and maintaining a safe work environment on construction projects. This position spends the majority of time in the field, observing work activities, coaching co-workers on safe practices, and correcting unsafe conditions and behaviors. The Safety Specialist serves as a hands-on resource to the project team, helping to improve safety, quality, and productivity, and may supervise lower-level Field Safety Representatives and Coordinators while reinforcing positive safety behaviors through recognition and rewards.

Responsibilities

  • Spend 100% of working time in the field observing work activities and identifying unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Coach co-workers on safe work practices and provide real-time guidance to correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Supervise and support lower-level Field Safety Representatives and Coordinators as needed.
  • Reinforce positive safety behavior through recognition and rewards to encourage a strong safety culture.
  • Serve as a resource to co-workers by answering safety-related questions and sharing lessons learned from previous projects and incidents.
  • Integrate closely with the project team and use a hands-on approach to improve project safety, quality, and productivity (SQP).
  • Help manage the safety of the crew and subcontractors, ensuring all parties follow established safety rules and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the project management team to address safety concerns and implement corrective actions.
  • Assist in ensuring project compliance with all applicable safety rules, regulations, and company policies.
  • Assist with or conduct case management related to safety incidents, including documentation and follow-up actions.
  • Monitor and promote a safe work environment across all areas of the project site.
  • Participate in safety training and certification activities, both as a learner and, when appropriate, as a facilitator.
  • Support continuous improvement of safety programs and procedures through feedback and observation.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated construction safety experience with a strong understanding of field operations.
  • Ability to spend all working time in the field actively observing work and engaging with co-workers.
  • Strong coaching and communication skills to effectively guide co-workers in correcting unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Capability to supervise and mentor lower-level Field Safety Representatives and Coordinators.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and best practices in a construction environment.
  • Ability to manage and influence safety performance for crews and subcontractors.
  • Experience assisting with or conducting case management for safety-related incidents.
  • Skill in reinforcing positive safety behaviors through recognition and rewards.
  • OSHA 10 certification (minimum requirement).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Experience working directly with project management teams to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Ability to serve as a trusted safety resource by answering questions and sharing lessons learned.
  • Experience participating in or delivering safety training and certifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating safety risks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse project team and adapt to changing site conditions.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based on active construction sites, with the Safety Specialist expected to spend 100% of working time in the field. The work environment includes exposure to typical construction conditions such as outdoor weather, noise, moving equipment, and ongoing building activities. The position requires consistent presence on site to observe work, interact with crews and subcontractors, and support the project team. Appropriate safety attire and personal protective equipment are required and must be worn in accordance with site safety policies. The role involves close collaboration with field personnel and project management, focusing on maintaining a safe, compliant, and productive job site.

This is a Contract position based out of Portsmouth, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $46.00/hr.
