We are seeking knowledgeable and proactive Safety Specialist - Rail to support railroad operations, construction activities, and regulatory compliance initiatives on both day shift and night shift assignments. Reporting to the Safety Manager, these roles are responsible for promoting a strong safety culture through inspections, audits, incident investigations, training, and risk mitigation activities across rail operations and project sites.

The ideal candidates will have experience with railroad safety regulations, operational risk management, and field-based safety oversight within active rail environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Conduct inspections of rail tracks, equipment, facilities, and work areas to ensure compliance with FRA, OSHA, and applicable safety regulations
  • Perform routine safety audits and monitor adherence to established safety procedures and protocols
  • Investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and operational safety incidents and prepare detailed reports with corrective action recommendations
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and field personnel
  • Monitor and enforce proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Identify workplace hazards and support implementation of corrective and preventive safety measures
  • Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and operational risk assessments
  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and investigations
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation related to safety activities and compliance reporting
  • Support emergency response preparedness and incident response activities
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, construction, and contractor teams to promote safe work practices

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation, Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field preferred
  • 3–5 years of experience in railroad operations, rail safety, transportation safety, construction safety, or related field
  • Strong knowledge of FRA, OSHA, FTA, and applicable railroad safety regulations and standards
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and preparing detailed reports
  • Understanding of railroad operations, track systems, maintenance activities, and rail equipment
  • Strong communication and training skills with the ability to influence safe work practices
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and safety reporting systems
  • Ability to identify hazards, assess risk, and implement corrective actions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • OSHA 30, CHST, CSP, or related safety certifications preferred
  • Experience supporting rail construction or transit infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with hazard identification and risk management methodologies, including MIL-STD-882E
  • Knowledge of environmental compliance and remediation programs

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, heavy equipment, moving trains, and active operational environments
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain, climb equipment or structures, and work in field conditions for extended periods
