Purpose Statement
The purpose of the Safety Supervisor position is to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of students, staff, and community members by maintaining a highly qualified team of drivers and monitors. This includes developing, implementing, and supervising driver/monitor training programs, conducting safety drills, and addressing departmental needs to maintain safety compliance and improve safety standards across the district.
Job Summary
The Safety Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the training and safety procedures for bus drivers and monitors, ensuring the safe operation of school buses and compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. This role also involves conducting safety drills, responding to accidents, and addressing safety-related concerns, as well as maintaining accurate records of training and licenses for all transportation personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Attends Meetings and Workshops: Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars to gather and convey important information for job functions
- Coordinates and Implements Evacuation Drills: Ensures that evacuation drills are conducted regularly to comply with safety requirements and procedures.
- Coordinates Driver/Monitor Training: Organizes training sessions for new bus drivers and monitors to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, and transportation safety policies.
- Creates and Implements Training Programs: Designs and implements effective safety training programs for both new and experienced drivers and monitors to ensure safety standards are met.
- Evaluates Drivers and Monitors: Conducts ride-along and road observations to assess performance, provide feedback, and initiate corrective actions or further training when necessary.
- Maintains Inventory of Safety Supplies: Ensures the availability of essential safety materials, including first aid supplies and emergency equipment.
- Maintains Training and Testing Records: Keeps accurate records of training, testing results, and manual dexterity testing to ensure compliance with federal, state, and district regulations.
- Monitors Special Equipment: Oversees the condition and availability of special equipment, such as Star Seats and lift straps, to ensure they are ready for use in emergencies.
- Observes and Instructs Drivers and Monitors: Provides guidance on loading/unloading procedures and behavioral expectations as outlined in Board Policy and the Transportation Handbook.
- Organizes Safety Meetings: Conducts safety workshops and hands-on activities to increase safety awareness and provide professional development for transportation personnel.
- Performs CDL License Checks: Reviews CDL licenses twice yearly in compliance with regulations to ensure all drivers are properly licensed.
- Assists Drivers with Student Behavior: Supports drivers in managing student behavior and training on alternative behavioral strategies.
- Responds to Accidents and Incidents: Investigates accidents, completes necessary reports, and follows district accident procedures, including filing insurance claims.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to perform multiple technical tasks, including organizing training, conducting evaluations, and ensuring safety compliance. Ability to operate equipment related to safety and training needs.
Knowledge of safety regulations, transportation policies, and compliance standards. Familiarity with vehicle safety equipment and first aid procedures is essential.
Ability to analyze situations, develop action plans, and implement strategies. Must be able to work with diverse groups and handle a variety of safety-related issues.
Experience and Education
Job-related experience with increasing responsibility in transportation safety or a related field is required.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional education in safety management or a related field is preferred.
