Job Description
The Sample Control Technician plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by managing the shipping, receiving, and handling of environmental samples and related materials. This position focuses on accurate sample preparation, safe handling of hazardous materials, and efficient processing of orders using internal systems. You will work in a fast-paced team environment, ensuring that all documentation, data handling, and physical tasks follow established standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Handle shipping, receiving, and warehousing activities for environmental samples and related materials.
- Process orders accurately using an internal database and maintain organized records.
- Use shipping provider websites to prepare labels, track shipments, and manage logistics.
- Clean and prepare sample media according to standard operating procedures.
- Build and repair flow controllers as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Assemble and dismantle shipping boxes and packaging to ensure safe transport of samples.
- Pressurize samples following established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Perform complete documentation, sample preparation, and data handling in strict adherence to SOPs.
- Safely handle and transport bulk chemicals, including cryogenic Dewars of liquid nitrogen, compressed gases (helium, nitrogen, hydrogen), sharps, and liquid solvents such as methylene chloride, acetonitrile, and acetone.
- Read, understand, and comply with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Injury and Illness Prevention Program for guidance on safe laboratory practices.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and operational procedures at all times.
- Prioritize work with minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Interpret and follow oral and written instructions with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Collaborate effectively with coworkers across departments to support high production work.
- Maintain a positive attitude toward quality control, safety, and organized work processes.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with coworkers and other stakeholders in person and by phone.
- Use Internet software and the Microsoft Office Suite to support documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Perform other support duties as assigned to ensure smooth laboratory and warehouse operations.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in shipping, receiving, and/or warehousing.
- Experience processing orders using an internal database or similar system.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for building, repairing, and handling technical components such as flow controllers.
- Proficiency in using shipping provider websites for labels, tracking, and logistics.
- Ability to take initiative and work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures with strong attention to detail in documentation and sample handling.
- Adherence to safety protocols and operational procedures, including hazardous material handling.
- Organizational skills to prioritize work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to interpret and understand oral and written instructions accurately.
- Good communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds on a continuous basis.

Work Environment
This role operates in an active laboratory and warehouse support setting focused on environmental sample analysis. You will work in a fast-paced environment that requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive use of hands and arms to perform moderate physical duties. The laboratory houses hazardous materials, including cryogenic Dewars of liquid nitrogen, compressed gases such as helium, nitrogen, and hydrogen, sharps, and liquid solvents like methylene chloride, acetonitrile, and acetone, all of which must be handled and transported safely in accordance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. You will use computers with Internet access and the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as shipping provider websites and standard material handling equipment such as carts. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Sacramento, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.
