DESCRIPTION

The City of Wilmington, a leading Delaware employer, provides the City sanitation, recycling, street cleaning, water, and transportation services through the Department of Public Works. The Department provides a wide array of services, including once a week recycling and once a week residential solid waste collection, treatment and distribution of high quality drinking water, collection and treatment of sewage, stormwater management, sweeping of all City streets, street paving and repairs, maintenance of traffic signs and signals, line striping, rodent control, snow removal, and maintenance of the City fleet and City properties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for collecting and transporting solid waste and recyclables using sanitation trucks while ensuring safe and efficient operations in various weather conditions. Will also provide support for snow removal as needed. This position reports to the Sanitation Supervisor. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Performs difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties.
  • Operates compactor or packer type refuse trucks which collect garbage, rubbish, and refuse.
  • Operates snow removal equipment as needed.
  • Work occasionally requires the performance of tasks requiring the use of hand tools.
  • Chucking is required on an as needed basis to cover operational need.
  • Possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B driver license with airbrakes endorsement and active medical examiner certificate, a good driving record, and ability to pass drug screening mandated by the Federal Department of Transportation for CDL drivers.
  • Performs all related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency with good knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of moderately complex heavy equipment such as trucks, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Knowledge Knowledge and ability to perform semi skilled and skilled manual tasks without close supervision.
  • Skills Some experience performing difficult and heavy manual labor in connection with general sanitation duties such as picking up solid waste and loading it into trucks. Possess good customer service skills and the ability to deal with the general public. Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Abilities Ability to detect operating defects in equipment and perform daily preventive maintenance duties. Ability to lift or move heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds over extended periods of time. Ability to walk for prolonged periods and distances in hot and cold weather.
  • Licenses Possess and maintain a valid CDL Class B driver license with airbrakes endorsement and a good driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation, drug test, and pre employment physical.

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently lifts or moves up to 50 to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently works in highly precarious places and is exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls. Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and talk or hear.

Sick Leave: Accumulates at the rate of one day for each completed month of service, beginning after the first full month of employment.

Vacation: At least eight (8) hours of vacation per month after the completion of the first six (6) months of continuous employment until the next January 1. Each January 1 thereafter, employee will be credited with at least ninety-six (96) hours* of vacation for the calendar year, until the completion of five (5) years of continuous service.

Life Insurance: The City agrees to provide term life insurance for each eligible employee for a maximum of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000.00) at no cost.
