Consultant Expectations
- The City is seeking a highly experienced Senior SAP ABAP / S/4HANA Technical Consultant to provide hands-on technical development, integration, modernization, and production support across the SAP landscape.
- The consultant will support both the existing SAP ECC environment and S/4HANA transformation initiatives and will be expected to work independently on complex technical assignments.
- The role requires strong traditional ABAP expertise combined with experience in modern SAP development technologies, including S/4HANA, OData, REST APIs, SAP Build, BTP, and CI/CD practices.
- The consultant will work closely with SAP functional teams, integration resources, Basis, Security, infrastructure teams, vendors, and other technical resources to design and deliver scalable and supportable SAP solutions.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Extensive hands-on experience as a Senior SAP ABAP Developer / Technical Consultant in complex enterprise SAP environments.
- Strong hands-on development experience with both SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA.
- Demonstrated experience supporting ECC-to-S/4HANA transformation, modernization, and custom-code remediation activities.
- Advanced hands-on experience with:
- ABAP Objects / Object-Oriented ABAP
- ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model (RAP)
- Core Data Services (CDS Views)
- OData services
- REST APIs and web services
- BAPIs, BAdIs, RFCs, and IDocs
- SAP Enhancement Framework
- Adobe Forms and/or Smart Forms
- SAP Fiori / SAPUI5
- Debugging and performance optimization
- Strong experience designing, developing, consuming, and troubleshooting APIs and API-based SAP integrations.
- Hands-on experience with SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).
- Hands-on experience with SAP Build, including applicable SAP Build capabilities for application development and process automation.
- Strong experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices for SAP development, including Git-based source control, automated deployment, code management, and release processes.
- Experience with SAP Cloud Transport Management or comparable SAP transport and deployment technologies.
- Strong understanding of S/4HANA clean-core principles, extensibility models, and modern SAP development standards.
- Experience analyzing existing custom ABAP applications and determining whether solutions should be remediated, redesigned, replaced, or retired as part of an S/4HANA transformation.
- Experience integrating SAP with cloud, SaaS, and third-party enterprise applications.
- Strong experience with technical design, development standards, code reviews, unit testing, documentation, and production deployment.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex SAP production issues and perform root-cause analysis.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and take technical assignments from requirements through production implementation.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with SAP functional teams, Basis, Security, integration teams, infrastructure teams, vendors, and business stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
- Hands-on experience with SAP Integration Suite / Cloud Integration (CPI), including development, configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of SAP and third-party integrations.
Consultant Expectations
- This is a senior, hands-on contract position. The selected consultant must be capable of becoming productive quickly and working with minimal supervision.
- The consultant will be expected to take technical assignments from requirements through production implementation, including analysis, technical design, development, unit testing, documentation, deployment support, and post-production troubleshooting.
- The consultant should also be capable of evaluating existing SAP customizations and recommending solutions aligned with the City's modernization strategy, with particular emphasis on S/4HANA readiness, clean-core architecture, APIs, BTP, SAP Build, and modern CI/CD development practices.
- Knowledge transfer and documentation are expected throughout the engagement to ensure that solutions delivered by the consultant can be effectively supported by internal resources.
